Rous' Community Grants Program is open for applications, providing funding support for local activities, programs or events in the Northern Rivers.

The program supports initiatives that align with Rous’ core functions and deliver clear social, cultural or environmental benefits to the community.

Funding will be considered for projects that are focused on improving the region’s catchments and waterways, w**d biosecurity and bush regeneration programs, strengthening rural flood resilience, supporting drinking water education programs, or Aboriginal cultural initiatives.

The new program is offering grants ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 (excluding GST) to eligible organisations and groups across the Northern Rivers region.

Visit Rous' website for further information and to apply.

With recent rain events across the region, we are encouraging all landholders to check waterways and flood-affected areas on their property for w**ds that may have washed downstream.

🌧⛈ Heavy rainfall can carry seeds and plant fragments into paddocks and waterways, leading to the spread of invasive plants.

Here’s how you can help reduce the spread of w**ds:
👉Regularly monitor flood-affected areas for new w**d growth over the next 1–2 years
👉Identify and report unfamiliar w**ds to Rous Biosecurity for advice
👉Thoroughly clean vehicles and equipment before and after working in affected areas to avoid spreading seeds

🌿 Now is also a great time to hand-pull w**ds while the ground is still wet and friable.

This month our W**d Biosecurity team conducted targeted surveillance for Miconia calvescens at a known historical infested site in Dungay (Tw**d Shire).

👉 Their work resulted in two Miconia plants being located, each approximately 3 metres tall, within 600 metres of the original infestation area.

😟 Miconia is an invasive w**d which has the potential to form dense thickets and replace native understorey plants in sub-tropical rainforests. Its seeds remain viable in the soil for many years.

➡️ To effectively control Miconia, regular visits to these sites are therefore essential, even years after initial removal.

🌿 Following this recent inspection, the team will expand surveillance into neighbouring gullies to ensure any additional Miconia plants are detected early.

This month, our W**d Biosecurity Officers are carrying out targeted searches for Miconia calvescens (Miconia) at Dungay in the Tw**d Shire, an area where this w**d has previously been detected.

👉 Under the National Tropical W**ds Eradication Plan (2024-2028), we’re committed to checking areas around known Miconia sites for new growth.

❌ Miconia is an extremely invasive plant:

➡Mature trees (4–5 years old) can flower and fruit up to three times a year;
➡Seeds can stay viable in the soil for up to 16 years;
➡Living stems and branches that touch the ground can form new roots, creating daughter plants.

🌿 Our team is committed to preventing Miconia from becoming established in the Northern Rivers region. Long-term control means returning to these sites regularly, even years after initial removal.

We are asking for your help in keeping the Northern Rivers free from Miconia. If you have seen it, please call Rous (02) 6623 3800.

In March, our Catchment team carried out on-ground works at a property in Nashua, repairing an eroded streambed using rock and timber structures, followed by planting native vegetation along the banks.

💦 This Natural Flood Management project - part of the Northern Rivers Watershed Initiative - aims to ‘slow and spread the flow’ of water entering the Wilsons River, stabilise banks, reduce erosion, and capture sediment before it moves downstream.

🌿 The work supports easy movement of stock around the property, holds water in the landscape longer supporting pastures and remnant vegetation and builds on work carried out by the landholder further upstream.

🌧 The before-and-after results speak for themselves! The work on this creek is holding up well with heavy downpours and the recent rain we’ve received. This project is a great example of practical, on-ground restoration works Rous is managing to improve catchment health in the region.

👉The is funded through a $5 million grant from the NSW Government.
