Lismore & District Rural Fire Brigades' Group

Lismore & District Rural Fire Brigades' Group Four separate grass fires burnt approximately 440,000 hectares in just 8 hours. The fires were a catastrophic event.

Lismore Rural Fire Brigades Group was formed in September 1944 after devastating fires swept through the Western District of Victoria earlier that year. 500 homes were burnt, more than 15 people were killed and there were vast stock losses. In 1961 Cressy was the final brigade to join the Group, making up the 9 Brigade membership which has continued to the present day. The Lismore Group became reg

istered with the CFA in 1961. The Brigades in the Group turn out to fight grass, scrub, bush & structural fires. They also respond to motor vehicle accidents, chemical, biological & hazardous waste material incidents, confined space, high angle & trench rescue incidents & occasionally boat fires on the local lakes. The Brigades also support other emergency services at incidents, including flood assistance.

A new national warning system called AusAlert will be used across Australia from October 2026.

AusAlert will be able to send warning messages to your mobile device as push notifications during:
• Natural hazards such as bushfires, floods, and tsunamis
• Public health emergencies
• Biosecurity incidents
• Security threats

Before the system is introduced, it will be tested.
In Victoria, a local test will happen in the Geelong suburbs of Highton and Belmont on Thursday 18 June at 2 pm, followed by a national test on Monday 27 July at 2 pm.

More about the tests and rollout of AusAlert will be shared on the VicEmergency page in the coming weeks.
