NSW SES Lithgow Unit

NSW SES Lithgow Unit The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency, preparedness and response service dedicated to assisting the community of NSW.

It is made up almost entirely of volunteers, with 229 units located throughout the state. The units comprise of approximately 10,000 volunteer members, who are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our core responsibilities are for flood, storm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides support to general rescue efforts in the State. This includes Road Crash Rescue (

RCR), Vertical Rescue (VR), Urban Search and Rescue (USR), evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have also been trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. The Service's trained rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES assists other emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force, the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Engagement programs like FloodSafe, StormSafe and TsunamiSafe. These programs are supported by strategies and resources, are delivered locally through a range of activities and events and are a priority for the NSW SES. The aim is to engage at-risk communities on preparedness, response and recovery measures so that there is no loss of life and impacts caused by these events are minimised. This in turn builds community resilience to floods, storms and tsunami. For further information visit the NSW SES website at http://www.ses.nsw.gov.au

This weekend was the first of 2 weekends for the map reading and navigation course.

Members from the NSW SES Lithgow, NSW SES Molong Unit, NSW SES Orange City Unit and NSW SES Canowindra Unit met at the NSW SES Portland Unit to learn skills to help better serve the community.

Members learned skills such as:
* Triangulation
* Pacing, steps and timing
* Naismith's Rule
* Plotting points, navigating to and between them, and
* Route planning.

Claire threw in some jiggary pokery for good measure.

At the end of day 2, all members felt they had learned new skills and were feeling much more confident.

In a fortnight we will all come back together for the final 2 days of the course which includes a night navigation component and the final assessment.

Thank you to our trainers - John, Claire and Murray. We are all looking forward to reconvening in 2 weeks to finish this great course!

Tuesday night training was wet - but that didn't dampen our spirits!

Andre put together a fantastic scenario for Land Search training. Our unit was divided in to two teams - Alpha and Bravo.

We were given instructions to head up Hassan's Walls as we were "looking for evidence left behind after someone had gone missing" - our Fearless Leader, John. (Disclaimer - John was actually in his office the entire time!)

Keeley and Fletcher were great as first time Team Leaders, ensuring everyone in each team had a role and were comfortable in it.

Have you considered becoming a part of our unit? Head over to www.ses.nsw.gov.au and fill out an application form.

The NSW SES Lithgow Unit has spent time this weekend completing the Traffic Safety Course.

Our members spent time completing the theory portion of the course before getting hands on with the practical side of the course.

Our members used four cars to simulate traffic passing through the scene of an incident with one lane of a two lane road being closed.

Members used radio communications, stop/slow signs and light wands/bats to negotiate the "incident scene".

Have you considered the great work you could do in the community by joining the NSW SES Lithgow Unit? Take a look at www.ses.nsw.gov.au and complete an application form.
