Logan Hospital

Logan Hospital We’re the major public healthcare centre for the City of Logan, Queensland.

Logan Hospital is the major health centre for one of the fastest growing regions in the state. We have grown from a 48-bed community hospital in 1990 to a 448-bed hospital today, mirroring the rapid growth in population in the Logan region. We provide acute medical, surgical, rehabilitation, maternity, cardiology, orthopaedics, renal and other specialty services for children and adults. We're the

location of Queensland's largest ever hospital expansion project on an existing hospital site—with a total capital investment of more than one billion dollars. In the coming years, the hospital will increase in size by almost half, with a significant increase in beds and treatment spaces across several new wards and a range of expanded support services.

Future retrieval doctors in the making 🩺

Medical students from our Emergency Department at Logan Hospital have had a behind‑the‑scenes look at LifeFlight in action during a visit to its Brisbane base last month . 🚁

From hopping inside the helicopter and jet, to running through medical simulations, the group got a real feel for what it takes to deliver critical care in the air.

A big thanks to Logan Hospital ED Staff Specialist, Dr Brad Richardson for guiding the session and sharing his experience on the front line! 👨🏻‍⚕️

We love seeing our future workforce get hands‑on experience and inspire the next generation of retrieval doctors, because today’s students are tomorrow’s life‑savers. 💓

Patients in the Acute Care of the Elderly Unit (ACU) at Logan Hospital are dancing, walking and gardening their way to recovery through the new ‘ACU MOVE It’ program. 🌿💃☀️

Led by Senior Physiotherapist Tina Parah and Recreation Officer Sheryl Costello, the initiative supports patients with cognitive impairment to stay active, build confidence and improve mobility during their hospital stay.

What started as supervised ward walks has grown into garden sessions filled with music, movement and sunshine, helping create a calmer ward environment and brighter recovery journeys for patients like 81-year-old Dave Wilde (pictured). 💜

At just 18 years old, Peer Worker Ari Travis is already helping shape a more inclusive and culturally responsive future for mental health care at Logan Hospital. 🏥

A proud Māori man, Ari recently joined the Social Inclusion and Recovery Team, bringing not only cultural understanding, but also powerful lived experience to the role.

After spending time in adolescent mental health wards himself and experiencing homelessness on the streets of Logan, Ari understands firsthand the challenges many young people face when seeking support.

Now, he’s using those experiences to help others feel heard, supported and connected. ❤️‍🩹

“By using my own experiences to support others, I hope I can help break down barriers, strengthen trust and create a more compassionate mental health system for some of the community’s most vulnerable people,” Ari said.

In just a few short weeks, Ari has already made a remarkable impact on colleagues, consumers and clinicians alike. One of his standout achievements includes developing a Māori recovery book to support people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds on their recovery journey. 📘✨

The innovative resource is now being considered for broader use across Metro South Health facilities.

We’re proud to have Ari as part of the team and can’t wait to see the difference he continues to make. 👏

Tiny cuddles are making a big difference at Logan Hospital’s Neonatal Unit during this year’s Kangaroo-a-thon. 🦘👶

New mums Petrina and Emma are among the parents embracing the fun challenge that runs for 2 weeks each May.

Kangaroo-a-thon encourages families to record the number of hours they spend cuddling their precious babies through Kangaroo Care, commonly known as skin to skin contact.

Kangaroo Care involves placing a baby directly on a parent’s chest and has been shown to support bonding and breastfeeding, regulate a baby’s temperature and heart rate, and promote growth and development.

The friendly challenge not only highlights the important health benefits of Kangaroo Care but also gives families the chance to celebrate special moments with their bubs during their neonatal journey.

Petrina said having little Hezekyah on her chest relaxed them both tremendously and even improved her beautiful bub’s oxygen saturation.

Emma’s tiny twins are just one week old and today was her first opportunity to snuggle both babies at once.

She said the feeling of holding Leo and Ellie-May on her chest at the same time was surreal and lovely.

Thank you to these lovely mums for letting us share these special moments and, as always, thank you to our incredible neonatal team for their compassionate care. 💜

This week, we’re celebrating both National Palliative Care Week and an incredible achievement by our dedicated Palliative Care team at Logan Hospital. 💜

The team has been recognised for transforming a clinical space into a sanctuary of comfort, dignity and peace for patients and families. Through calming colours, music, scents, nature imagery and homelike touches, they have created an environment that supports compassionate, patient-centred care at some of life’s most important moments.

The initiative, led by Nurse Unit Manager Gillian Myles, Clinical Facilitator Tinsy Thomas and the wider Palliative Care team, has inspired change across Metro South Health and beyond, highlighting the powerful impact thoughtful care environments can have on patients, families and staff.

During National Palliative Care Week, we thank our Palliative Care team for the kindness, compassion and comfort they provide every day. 🌻

International Nurses Day brought all the good vibes across Metro South this week. 🎆

From award ceremonies to sweet treats and engaging activities across our facilities, it's a small token of gratitude for the incredible work our nurses do every single day. 🏥

"Across every ward, unit, clinic, service, and setting, our nurses bring skill, courage, professionalism, and kindness to their work. You are present at the most vulnerable and significant moments in people's lives, providing comfort, clinical expertise, reassurance, advocacy, education, and leadership. You coordinate complex care, respond to changing needs, mentor others, drive improvement, and uphold the highest standards of practice," said Adjunct Professor Mish Hill, Executive Director Nursing and Midwifery, Metro South Health.

We’re incredibly proud of all of our award recipients, and we're equally proud of every nurse across Metro South who brings heart, humour, resilience, and world‑class care to every shift. ❤️‍🩹

Your dedication shapes healthier futures and stronger communities. 🌻

After caring for thousands of women and families over 40 years, Midwifery Educator Jodi Bunn has been recognised for her contribution to midwifery education and patient care. 👩🏻‍⚕️

Jodi has been with Logan hospital for 30 of those years where she has played a key role in supporting and developing generations of midwives, students and graduates. She has also seen the campus grow from 1 building to (almost) 4! 🏥✨

As Metro South’s first ever Midwifery Educator, Jodi has helped grow and strengthen the midwifery workforce while continuing to advocate for education, training and professional development.

Reflecting on her career, Jodi said every opportunity had helped shape her journey. 🌱

“Every opportunity is a learning opportunity,” she said.

Congratulations on 40 amazing years, Jodi. 👏

No, you’re not seeing double, it’s just Logan Hospital’s lookalike mother-daughter duo – Media Director Heidi and Assistant-in-Nursing Lucy! 🤩

Promoting the hospital’s good work for more than ten years, Heidi encouraged her daughter to embark on a healthcare career path while she was still at high school.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work with a lot of amazing clinicians and get to see the impact they can have,” Heidi said. “I’m really proud that my daughter is following in their footsteps and has chosen to study nursing.”

Lucy, who now works as an AIN while she studies to be a registered nurse, said she never thought she’d be carpooling to work with her mum.

“We do everything together, we’re best friends, and now we even get to come to work together,” she said.

This Mother’s Day, Lucy has a special shout-out for her mum and best friend.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better mum. Seeing how hard she works and the effort she puts in to what she does is so inspiring.

“I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without her and the support she shows me every day.”

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums and mother figures in our community! 🩷
