As part of Australia Day celebrations, there will be fireworks at Gosford and The Entrance tonight.

Please ensure your pets are securly inside watching their favorite tv show or relaxing to their favorite tunes. Even if you do not live near the fireworks locations, please be aware that local neighbourhood celebrations may also cause stress for some pets.

Please note that traffic in these areas will be heavier than usual.

Detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning
for HEAVY RAINFALL
For people in parts of Maitland/Cessnock, Greater Newcastle and Gosford/Wyong areas.

Issued at 1:17 pm Sunday, 18 January 2026.

Heavy rainfall is ongoing about parts of the Hunter.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 12:55 pm, severe thunderstorms likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding were detected near Charlestown and Swansea. These thunderstorms are moving towards the west. They are forecast to affect Lake Macquarie, Mulbring and Morisset by 1:25 pm and Paxton, Bellbird and Cooranbong by 1:55 pm.

74.2 mm OF RAINFALL WAS RECORDED AT WEBBS CREEK (WISEMANS FERRY) IN THE 2 HOURS TO 8:37 AM.

72.0 mm of rainfall was recorded at Maroota (Tobruk) in the 3 hours to 8:32 am.

53.2 mm of rainfall was recorded at Shanes Park (South Creek Road) in 1 hour to 06:55 am.

68.0 mm of rainfall was recorded at Liverpool (Georges River) in the 5 hours to 05:15 am.

39.5 mm of rainfall was recorded at Kelso Creek in 1 hour to 04:45 am.

44.0 mm of rainfall was recorded at Peakhurst Golf Club in 1 hour to 04:30 am.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
For emergency help in flood and storms, ring the SES on 132 500.
Stay updated on the Hazards Near Me NSW app or the ACT ESA website (https://esa.act.gov.au).

The next warning is due to be issued by 3:00 pm.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for parts of the Metropolitan, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Hunter and Illawarra districts. Other warnings may be current.
