Census Night 11th of August 2026

📊 Every Person Counts. Every Response Matters.

When Census forms arrive, we encourage every household to take a few minutes to complete them.

The information collected through the Census helps governments understand who lives in our communities and what services are needed now and into the future. For smaller councils in particular, accurate population data can influence funding decisions and support investment in things like:

✅ Community facilities and recreational spaces
✅ Roads and local infrastructure
✅ Health and aged care services
✅ Childcare and education planning
✅ Emergency and community support services

If our community is undercounted, it can mean fewer resources are allocated to meet local needs.

By completing your Census form, you're helping ensure our towns are represented accurately and receive the support needed to continue thriving.

Every person counts. Make sure you're counted.

Longreach Water for Security Project – July 2026 Update

Council is pleased to provide the following update in relation to the above project:

Thomson River Weir Upgrades:

- Regional Interests Development Approval (RIDA) and Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) approvals have been granted, allowing work to proceed.
- Work to demolish and reconstruct Anabranch Weirs 1 & 2 is scheduled to commence in August 2026. This plan differs from the original plan to demolish and reconstruct all 5 Thomson River weirs concurrently. The change has been initiated due to the flooding events earlier in 2026, and because of ongoing latent ground conditions, while being mindful of the short construction period before the possible onset of the annual end of year wet season.
- Council anticipates completing Anabranch Weirs 1 & 2 this calendar year, before progressing with the three remaining weirs in 2027.
- Council has secured suppliers for concrete, rock, structural steel and sheet piling services required to complete the project.
- Raising the weirs will increase water storage capacity by approximately 28% from 3,600ML to 4,500ML.
- Council has engaged Bidjara Cultural Heritage Officers (CHOs) to monitor clearance of laydown areas and construction actives such as trenching and excavating.
- Council will provide further updates on the project status over the coming few months

Water Mains Replacement (Longreach)

- A contract has been awarded to replace aged and failing water mains in Longreach to reduce leakages. Work on this project commenced in mid-May 2026 and is expected to continue until November 2026.
Digital Water Meters
- Installation of digital water meters for residential properties in Longreach has been completed.
- Installation of digital water meters across Council’s parks and reserves has commenced.
- Installation of the commercial digital water meters is scheduled to be completed by the end of July 2026.
