Last week we gathered to officially open the relocated Greensborough War Memorial a place of reflection, remembrance and respect for generations past and present.

The memorial stands as a tribute to the men and women who served our nation, including local servicemen like David John “Jack” Medhurst, a Greensborough boy who enlisted in the First World War and made the ultimate sacrifice near Pozieres in 1916.

Jack’s final letter home, written shortly before his death, is a powerful reminder of the courage, resilience and humanity of those who served. More than 100 years later, his story and the stories of so many others continue to live on.

Thank you to the Greensborough RSL, veterans, families and community members who gathered to mark this important occasion and ensure these stories are remembered for generations to come.

Join us for the Official Opening of the Greensborough War Memorial as we come together to honour the service and sacrifice of our veterans and officially unveil this important community landmark - Everyone is welcome.

Date: Friday 31 July
Time: 1:00pm – 1.30pm
Location: Greensborough War Memorial Park

Description: Plaque unveiling and ribbon-cutting event.
Special guests: Colin Brooks MP, Greensborough RSL Sub-branch President Dal Crocker will also be in attendance.

Special instructions: Meet at the war memorial on the western side of the park. Ample parking throughout the area but best access to the war memorial is from the car park off McDowell St.

It was great to attend the launch of Anne Paul’s new book Walking the Kurrum Yallock (Plenty River) Volume 2.

The book continues the walking journey of Anne’s first book Volume 1, on its history with walks from the Yarra River to Yallambie providing insight into key aspects of our recent history.

Thank you to Anne and everyone who assisted in the researching and writing of this special book.

This looks like an interesting exhibition

On 1 June 1837 Robert Hoddle stood on a log and began auctioning the first allotments of land in the newly-surveyed Hoddle Grid, now the heart of Melbourne's CBD. The purchasers came from a wide variety of backgrounds, but most shared a common ambition: to build wealth in a fast-growing new settlement.

This exhibition introduces some of those early purchasers — from former convicts and publicans to merchants and investors whose fortunes were tied to global trade. They acquired land on Wurundjeri country for next to nothing, setting in motion changes that would shape the city for generations. Some went on to amass considerable fortunes; others lost everything. Every allotment reveals Melbourne's complex origins.

The exhibition also traces how these allotments have evolved. It looks at the buildings that once stood — and those that stand today. Melbourne began as an act of confidence and enterprise — and that speculative spirit remains part of the city’s character today
