Today, 3rd June, we mark Mabo Day - a landmark moment in Australian history and a celebration of courage, justice, and then enduring connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to Country.

On this day in 1992, the High Court of Australia delivered its historic ruling in the Mabo case, overturning the colonial fiction of terra nullius - the idea that this land belonged to no one before British settlement. It was a profound turning point, not just legally, but in how Australia began to reckon honestly with its past.

At the heart of that decision was Eddie Koiki Mabo - a Meriam man from the Murray Islands in the Torres Strait - whose decade-long fight for his people's land rights changed the course of this nation. Tragically, Eddie passed away just five months before the ruling was handed down. His legacy lives on in every native title claim, every acknowledgement of Country, and every step forward on the path to justice.

Today we honour Eddie Mabo, and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples whose deep, continuous connection to Country was never extinguished - no matter what the law once said.

Last Friday, we attended the Mackay Region Chamber of Commerce Awards, where we were nominated for both the It's Not Easy Being Green and Ground Breaker awards.

We are incredibly proud to share that we took home the It's Not Easy Being Green award, recognising the impact of our food diversion program.

What began in 2020 has now seen MORE THAN 150 tonnes of food diverted from landfill and redistributed throughout our community. Every kilogram represents food that has gone to families, individuals and community members, while reducing waste and creating a more sustainable future for our region.

To put it simply, 150 tonnes is a staggering amount of food. Sometimes even we stop and reflect on the scale of what has been achieved through this program.

This award belongs to so many people!! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸผThank you to the Mackay Chamber of Commerce for celebrating the work being done across our community.

To our local supermarkets, producers and food donors - THANK YOU for your ongoing generosity and commitment to reducing food waste while supporting local people.

And most importantly, thank you to our incredible volunteers. You are the heart of this program. Your time, energy and dedication make this work possible every single day. Quite simply, this program would not exist without you.

Together, we are proving that small actions, repeated consistently, can create meaningful social and environmental impact! ๐Ÿ’š ๐Ÿก

May. What a month you were. ๐ŸŒŸ ๐Ÿก

From the top of the month to the very last day, the TNHub team has been out in the community, engaging and connecting on moments that matter most.

We kicked off May attending the Mackay Mayor's Charity Ball๐ŸŽ‰, where we were honoured to be named charity partner for 2026/2027, with funds raised supporting our Food Diversion Program!

We celebrated Neighbourhood Centres Week with a trip to our neighbours at The Bowen Community Centre, a reminder of the strength that comes from staying connected across our region. ๐Ÿค

On 26 May, we headed to Cape Hillsborough for a Cultural Educational Talk facilitated by Yuwi Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC Mackay QLD. ๐ŸŒฟ

National Families Week brought a special celebration at Community Playgroup Thursday and we also joined in the Under 8s Day at Victoria Park State School. Simple, warm, and exactly the kind of moment that reminds us why connection matters. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ

May is DFV Awareness Month, and we showed up for it in every way we could. We hosted the Zonta Club of Mackay ๐ŸŸ , we wore purple every Friday ๐Ÿ’œ, we attended a candle lighting ceremony, took photo with the RESPECT letters at Mount Pleasant Centre, we welcomed the DFV Prevention Council on 28 May and hosted a community self-defence workshop alongside a conversation about the many forms of domestic and family violence. And we joined our community at the DFV March at Blue Water Quay.

National Volunteer Week gave us the chance to stop, look around, and say thank you. We attended the Mackay Regional Council Volunteer Expo and hosted a special morning tea to celebrate the people who give their time so generously to TNHub. TNHub does not happen without you. โค๏ธ

And somewhere in between all of that, we made it to not one but two national conferences, the FCA Conference in Cairns and the FRSA National Conference in Brisbane.

To everyone who walked alongside us this month - thank you!! This is what community looks like. ๐Ÿ’› ๐Ÿก

This National Reconciliation Week we pause to reflect, listen and recommit.

The theme for is All In - a reminder that reconciliation isn't something that happens on the sidelines. It calls on all of us, every day, to show up with open hearts and a genuine commitment to learning, understanding, and action.

We acknowledge the Yuwibara Peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we work, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We recognise the deep and continuing connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have to Country, culture and community.

Reconciliation is a shared journey - and we are proud to walk it together.
