Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS in the areas of the
Hunter, Illawarra and parts of Mid North Coast, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, Northern Tablelands, Northern Rivers and North West Slopes and Plains Forecast Districts.

Issued at 1631 hrs Eastern Standard Time on Monday 10 August 2026.

Damaging winds along the Great Dividing Range and coastal plains including Newcastle and Wollongong.

Weather Situation: Vigorous westerly flow has extended along much of the Great Dividing Range today in the wake of a cold front.

Winds are expected to shift southwesterly with the passage of a trough overnight into Tuesday, gradually easing later into the day.

For the HUNTER VALLEY, including NEWCASTLE: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts around 90 km/h are possible, easing into the evening.

For the ILLAWARRA COAST, including WOLLONGONG: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts around 90 km/h are possible from later this evening into early Tuesday morning.

For the remainder of the GREAT DIVIDING RANGE: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts around 100 km/h are likely, gradually easing below warning thresholds during Tuesday morning.

Locations which may be affected include Newcastle, Wollongong, Armidale, Goulburn, Nowra, Scone, Katoomba, Cessnock, Maitland, Bowral, Braidwood and Dorrigo.

93 km/h wind gust was recorded at Nobbys Head at 1439 hrs.

91 km/h wind gust was recorded at Williamtown at 1407 hrs.

93 km/h wind gust was recorded at Bellambi at 1234 hrs.

106 km/h sustained winds were recorded at Thredbo Top Station at 1035 hrs.

104 km/h wind gust was recorded at Murrurundi Gap at 0617 hrs.

* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.

Damaging winds over alpine areas today, extending broadly across eastern NSW on Monday.

Weather Situation: North to northwesterly winds will strengthen on Sunday ahead of a cold front forecast to cross NSW later on Sunday.

Vigorous west to northwesterly winds will follow on Monday as a low pressure system moves into Bass Strait, extending gusty conditions broadly over the Great Dividing Range, the Hunter Valley and elevated terrain over eastern New South Wales.

For SNOWY MOUNTAINS above 1500 metres: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are likely during Sunday, easing later on Monday.

For ALPINE AREAS above 1900 metres: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 125 km/h are likely during Sunday, easing during Monday morning.

For the GREAT DIVIDING RANGE broadly: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are possible from Monday morning, becoming more likely during Monday afternoon, then gradually easing from early Tuesday morning.

For the HUNTER VALLEY, including NEWCASTLE: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are likely during Monday afternoon, easing later on Monday evening.

🚨 A new national warning system is being tested TOMORROW across Australia with NSW residents receiving alerts at 1400 hrs. (2pm)

Your mobile devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and smart watches, may receive a test alert.

The message will vibrate and include a loud, siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds.

The AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, we need to test the system across Australia.

⚠️ If this could disrupt you or cause you or a loved one to feel unsafe, please turn off your mobile devices or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in your location, and leave them off for at least one hour.

As this is just a test, you don’t need to do anything, but in an actual disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.
