Free Webinar - Building resilience to natural hazard risk with Andrew Gissing

5 - 6 pm, 26 October 2022

Over the last three years, Australia has been reminded again of the nature of natural hazard extremes that can strike our nation.

Building resilience to natural hazard events is crucial in the face of expanding communities and climate change.

The presentation will explore the context of natural hazards in Australia and draw on research into how Australia can become more resilient in the face of growing natural hazard-related challenges.

From this presentation, you will gain an understanding of the following:

- the relative risk profile from bushfires, floods, cyclones, earthquakes and hailstorms based on loss
- what is driving the changes in risk profile
- opportunities to build better resilience and cost-effectiveness
- the challenges and moving forward.

Ashby was thrilled to host the Canine for Wildlife team who joined Resilient Clarence at a workshop hosted by on 27 August.

In this video you will meet the Wildlife Canine team including Max, a wildlife detection dog being used to locate rare and endangered fauna such as koalas.

Dogs see the world in terms of how it smells and different breeds of dogs can be utilized by scientists for their highly tuned olfactory systems.

Armed with 250 million scent detectors they are fast and efficient at locating target species and are helping scientists as they study rare and endangered species of wildlife.

Max shows just how easy it is for him to locate a koala in Ashby.

You will be looking at the landscape post-burning season, there won't be fire on the ground during this event.

Light refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP to [email protected] as spaces are limited.

Produced by Resilient Clarence, this video tells the story of a collaborative approach to land management.

Property owner Barbara Linley is working under the guidance of First Nations fire practitioner Craig Little to bring cool, gentle, mosaic burns back to the landscape with the hope that it will prevent the devastation of the 2019-20 bushfires.

As a part of this year's NAIDOC celebrations, we are sharing this video from the Resilient Clarence workshop for Yaegl students, Culturally Caring for Yaegl Country.

The workshop was held in partnership with Yaegl Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation on Barbara Linley’s bushfire-affected property. We teamed up with Red Cross, Envite, Yaegl Elders and Fire Practitioner Craig Little, who together shared information on healing Country and how to care for Country with cultural appropriateness.

Craig shared with us some of the fire lore knowledge passed on to him from Victor Steffensen, a Tagalaka man and author of Fire Country, which is part of the Resilient Clarence Library Resource Collection. http://ow.ly/Kktx50JQ9MB

Big shout out to ALL Clarence Valley volunteers, including our wonderful emergency volunteers.

It is National Volunteer Week and we are excited to share this Thank You video with you on behalf of all our project partners and the organisers of the Maclean Thank You Day on May 7.

To those in our community who saved the town during the recent floods, and to everyone else, we say:

07/05/2022

So...this just happened...

Thanks to all our emergency services and disaster resilience & recovery agencies, all volunteer groups and all other local residents who helped make the Maclean Thank You Day at Maclean Showgrounds special by forming this Big Heart, guided by our team (it's amazing what people will do for chocolates 🙂 )

This is a big Thank You to everyone who supported our communities during the series of disasters, from the 2019/20 bush fires to the latest floods.

Sending our love...from the heart of Maclean!
