🌿🔥 Spring is here — now is the time to prepare.

As the weather starts to change across the Central Coast District and we head towards the warmer months, take 5 minutes now to look around your home and make sure you’re prepared.

You don’t have to live in the bush for your home to be at risk from bush fires.

We’ve seen the devastating impact bush fires can have right here on the Central Coast.

In December 2025, a devastating bush fire swept through Koolewong, Phegans Bay and Woy Woy Bay. Fueled by hot and windy conditions, the fire spread with alarming speed, burning more than 129 hectares.

🔥Small and often silent, embers can travel well ahead of the main fire and cause devastating damage to homes.

There are simple steps you can take now to help protect your home:

🏡 Clear your gutters
🌿 Mow your lawn and trim your garden
🌳 Cut back overhanging branches
🍂 Remove leaves and other flammable materials around your home
📚 Know and discuss your Bush Fire Survival Plan
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Get your family and community prepared

What if Plan A isn’t an option?
Bush fires move fast, and roads can close suddenly without warning. Don’t
rely on a single route or destination. Prepare before you go, and always check
the conditions before you drive.
Download these free apps before you travel:
• Hazards Near Me NSW – Stay aware of fires and other hazards on your route.
• Live Traffic NSW – Check for road closures and changing traffic conditions.
• Emergency+ – Helps you call 000 and provides your location using your
smartphone’s GPS.
Make sure your Bush Fire Survival Plan includes:
• An alternative route.
• A backup destination.
• Family, friends or neighbours who know your plan.
The more prepared you are, the easier it is to act quickly when conditions
change.

Another way to get up to date information during a fire is looking out for a. Bushfire Information point that might pop up close to areas under fire attack.

Unlike a public meeting held in a hall these are small teams of people armed with the latest information

During a bush fire, power outages and communications
disruptions can affect how you receive emergency
information. Don’t rely on just one source.
Stay informed by:
• Downloading the Hazards Near Me app.
• Listening to local radio, including ABC Radio.
• Checking the NSW RFS website.
• Calling the Bush Fire Information Line on 1800 NSW RFS
(1800 679 737).
Having more than one way to receive updates can help
you stay safe when conditions change.

Campfires on the beach may look harmless — but they are not safe and are often illegal.
Many beaches in NSW are part of National Parks or reserves, where campfires are not
permitted at any time, regardless of weather or fire danger conditions.
Even outside National Parks, fires on beaches are dangerous. Heat can remain hidden
beneath the sand for hours, creating hot embers that can seriously burn people and can
reignite and spread into nearby dunes or bushland.
If you come across a fire or hot embers on a beach:
• Do not assume it is safe or fully out.
• Drench the area thoroughly with water — not just sand.
• Stir the sand and embers, then apply more water.
• Check for heat. If it’s warm, it’s not safe.
• Keep people well clear, especially children.
If there is an active fire, smoke, or you cannot fully extinguish it, call Triple Zero (000).
Help keep our coastline safe for everyone by avoiding beach fires and acting
responsibly if you encounter one.
