Maffra SES recently received its new Argo all-terrain vehicle. Maffra SES has had an all-terrain vehicle for approximately 35 years and they have been used on many search and rescues. The first all-terrain vehicle was a Bombardier Bombi 1991-2004. This was replaced by the unit's previous Argo which it owned for 20 years.

When SES personnel assist Police in land searches, the aim is always to have an outcome, to reunite loved ones, rescue someone injured or lost, and allow closure for families in worst case scenarios. Often the search areas are arduous, prickly, steep, remote, in all weather conditions, meticulously covered as requested. No member is out there for self-glorification; quite the opposite. Media acknowledgment of volunteer involvement is always appreciated, the hope is to encourage others to join their local Unit so they too can offer themselves to the service of others.

In an excellent example of interagency cooperation today firies, army reserve, AV, police, DELWP and SES downed tools from the work they have been concentrating on for weeks on end, that is the fires, to search for a lost 4 year old boy in an area of scorched East Gippsland north of Bairnsdale. Needless to say, conditions were warm, arduous, sooty and steep. Thankfully it was a happy outcome with the little fellow being located by DELWP crews approximately 8km from where he was last seen 24 hours earlier, a bit grubby black and still wearing his hat, boots and glasses.
