Our followers may be interested in attending this talk by a very engaging speaker Barry Golding on Thursday May 28 (bookings available in person at Bendigo Library or online)

🎤 Discovering History: Unsettling local history 🎤

Professor Golding's illustrated presentation will draw out some of the key findings and implications from his groundbreaking book Six Peaks Speak: Unsettling Legacies in Southern Dja Dja Wurrung Country. The comprehensive and often violent unsettling of Dja Dja Wurrung people, which occurred on and around the six local mountains featured in the book, is often obscured by the history of gold. So many of the stories, including those about the much-loved, nearby local peak, Liyanganuk/Mt Alexander, have not previously been told.

Book sales available ($59).

Six Peaks Speak was locally researched with Castlemaine-based geologist Clive William as part of a State Library Victoria Creative Fellowship in 2023.

MALMSBURY CEMETERY BURIAL REGISTER is now available online!
The Cemetery Trust has transferred the register to the Public Record Office Victoria (PROV), who have promptly digitised the book and added it to their website. The register starts in August 1862 and runs through to 2005.
While we know there were burials in Malmsbury prior to 1862, based on death certificates, no record has so far been uncovered which records which graves they are buried in. Only a few pre-1862 burials have gravestones on them.
Yes, there are errors in the register, and is some cases the exact grave location has not been recorded, but making this register (now VPRS 20100) freely available for all who are interested is a credit to the work of the Cemetery Trust and PROV. The hyperlink for the volume is:

Old Reservoir house to be relocated to Malmsbury. The story of Kaye Powell's decision to relocate her 99-year-old home to Malmsbury is on the ABC news website today. We look forward to Kaye adding to the town's "collection" of historic homes, and welcoming Kaye to our community. Do you know the history of your home? Malmsbury Historical Society is a great place to start.

Kaye Powell is preparing to cut her 99-year-old Reservoir home in half, put it on the back of a truck and transport it almost 100 kilometres away to Malmsbury.

NEW SPEED LIMITS IN MALMSBURY. This week the speed limits on the major approaches to Malmsbury (from Calder Highway, Daylesford and Taradale) were altered. The 80kmh limit from Daylesford is now only 60kph. The 70kph zone from the Calder interchange is now 60kph, and the 70kph zone as you approach from Taradale is now 60kph. Please be careful as you visit Malmsbury and reduce your speed to avoid being fined. We would sooner you enjoy your visit than make a costly voluntary contribution to state revenue. Please travel safely and have a great Christmas!

We are so pleased to see that repairs to the 1862 Malmsbury Railway Station are underway, after the extensive damage caused by the fire in late January 2024. Even better, the slate being used to replace the roof is repurposed Welsh Slate. Both the slate and the Malmsbury Bluestone used to construct the walls, windows and chimneys, are designated Global Heritage Stone Resources. A big
"thumbs up" to the friendly craftsmen of Lever Slate Roofing.
