The Balook HR burnt well this afternoon.

There is still active fire well within the boundaries of the burn, which does not pose a threat. We will continue to monitor overnight.

Thanks NSW RFS-Broulee Brigade, NSW RFS - Batemans Bay Brigade and NSW RFS - Long Beach Brigade, as well as Ann, Chris, Bugs, Breezy, Mark, Michael and Helen.

Today, Malua Bay Rural Fire Brigade had the opportunity to take part in a really valuable familiarity session with Kat from Ambulance NSW.

Sessions like this are incredibly important for us. We’re often called to assist ambulance officers at local incidents, and having a better understanding of how they work, what they need, and how we can support them makes a real difference on the ground. It helps us work more safely, more efficiently, and ultimately provide better outcomes for our community.

A huge thank you to Kat for taking the time to come out and share her knowledge and experience with us. Your professionalism, insight and willingness to engage with our members was greatly appreciated by everyone involved.

We’re very grateful for the strong working relationship between our agencies — it’s teamwork like this that underpins everything we do.

On International Women’s Day we acknowledge our many female firefighters and volunteers.

Your representation continues to help change lingering perceptions that firefighting is for blokes. None of us are here for the praise, but our female members are all fantastic humans - our brigade wouldn’t be the same without you.

We would love to welcome more female members to the team. Get in touch through Facebook or our website

The Malua Bay Rural Fire Brigade’s members are all volunteers, operating under NSWRFS. Protecting the coastal urban communities of Lilli Pilli, Malua Bay, Rosedale and Guerilla Bay & other rural residential areas - Burri & Ridge Roads plus Dunns Creek Road in Eurobodalla on the South Coast of NSW

Today we were called to what was initially notified as a tree alight.

When working in the bush, we’re always looking up for hazardous trees, especially in country that was burnt in 2019/20, which is particularly dangerous - everyone in the bush including firefighters, bushwalkers, and mountain bikers should take similar precautions.

A helpful local helped us locate a smouldering log.

Possibly ignited by a careless cigarette butt, we initially cooled everything off with our live reel. One of our trained chainsaw operators then cut the log into pieces so we could move sections and have a closer look.

We found that underneath the stump, the fire had burned down into the roots. See our video - the water we applied was bubbling in all the heat.

As well as digging down into the roots, our firefighters bare-earthed an area around the stump, a good effort on the rake-hoes on a warm summer day, in case the heat underground reignites the stump.

Everything ended well, and it was a great opportunity to put our knowledge and training to the test, working together as a team.

We will check the area tomorrow to ensure that it’s out. In the meantime, you will be able to check on the status in the Hazards Near Me app

A big thanks to the responsible locals who notified 000 and attempted to put it out. These sorts of fires can smoulder for weeks and cause huge problems with elevated fire danger ratings.

Santa's here!!

19/12/2025

We’ve been in close talks with Santa, planning their Christmas Eve Run around the brigade area - we know it well and try to visit everyone we can!

Starting at 2pm - keep an ear out for the sirens and an eye out for the big red trucks with the big red person on board.

A few of our shortest members (guess who they are in the comments) have been moonlighting as elves - so we have a few special treats on board for the kids (big and small).

Congratulations to Pat Harris on his 50-year long-service medal, which was presented at our Xmas party earlier today.

Special thanks to our wonderful members Helen Smith (Golden Drip Torch) and Mark Hudson (Golden Extinguisher) for their exceptional and public-spirited service.

It was a pleasure to welcome our special guests, Maxeme and Roger Tall, from the Tall Foundation. Their continued support is greatly appreciated.

We wish all our members, their families, and the community a merry Xmas and happy New Year.
