# caution
Not all slithering reptiles are snakes and not all snakes are venomous.
If you are unsure you should treat all as dangerous and venomous.
It is always best to keep a close eye on the reptile and contact your local specialist for removal.

The excitable delma (ED) is a species of lizard in the Pygopodidae family endemic to Australia. The lizard gets its name from its active and jumpy defense mechanism. It will erratically jump multiple times in succession, each jump pivoting its body in a different direction. Found this little guy at our home on the tablelands.

The eastern brown snake (EB), often referred to as the common brown snake, is a species of highly venomous snake in the family Elapidae. The species is native to eastern and central Australia and capable of inflicting a deadly bite if handled or provoked.

This time of year in the far north with all the rains we start to see a few more creatures trying to find warm dry shelter.
Always check your boots even if they are inside the house.
This scorpion was found at a front door escaping the rain.

Licensing Requirements: How to Apply for an R-Licence

The Restricted NSW Game Hunting Licence or R-Licence and written permission are required by law for hunting game and feral animals on declared State forests and Crown Land areas in NSW (this does not include National Parks). The R-Licence also incorporates the General NSW Game Hunting Licence (G-Licence), required by law for hunting wild deer, ducks and game birds on private land in NSW.
R-Licence categories: Bows, Fi****ms, Dogs, Black Powder.
R-Licence Types: Standard ($60/yr), Commercial ($250/yr), Hunting Guide ($150/yr) and Overseas Visitors ($100/yr).

Application forms are available from the Game Council or Approved Hunting Organisations (AHOs).

Meeting R-Licence requirements
There are a number of requirements that must be met before applicants can apply for the R-Licence from Game Council NSW. Applicants must:
A) Be a member of a Game Council Approved Hunting Organisation (AHO),and
šŸ˜Ž Become accredited for one or more of the R-Licence categories (Bows, Fi****ms, Dogs or Blackpowder).

APPROVED HUNTING ORGNISATIONS (AHOs)
Game Council NSW has registered close to 100 ā€œApproved Hunting Organisationsā€ who are authorised to offer their members applications and accreditation for the R-Licence. These AHOs are listed on Game Council’s website which is updated regularly or by contacting the Licensing Processing Unit.

ACCREDITATION
There are three ways of becoming accredited for your R-Licence category/s:
1. Sit a closed book ā€œrecognition of prior learningā€ test
2. Complete an accredited training course
3. Sit an open book test based on Game Council’s ā€œNSW Hunter Education Handbookā€.
Accreditation for your R-Licence category can be carried out by an approved assessor who must be registered with an AHO or by an organisation that offers the accredited training course. Contact your local AHO for further information.

The application process
Application forms for the R-Licence are available from AHOs, once completed, the form must be submitted to Game Council NSW for approval.
Your R-Licence application form must be accompanied by relevant documentation including a copy of your current Fi****ms Licence (if applicable), accreditation, concession, and your AHO membership number. If your R-Licence application is approved by the Game Council, you will be issued with a special pin or customer number via post to assist in the booking process for hunting on declared public land.

Hunting on declared public land
Obtaining written permission
Hunting on declared public land areas cannot take place without written permission. When you have received your R-Licence, you must book your hunt through Game Council NSW. This can be done using the internet or by phoning the Game Council.
When making a booking, you must quote your customer number (which acts as a pin number) as well as your R-Licence number. Special forms will be available for group bookings.
The booking system has been put in place to maximise public safety and hunter accountability. The written permission will have conditions applying to hunting on the State forest and include a map of the area.

The hunt
While hunting on declared public land you must:
ā–ŗ Carry your written permission including a forest map, R-Licence and Fi****ms Licence (if applicable);
ā–ŗ Wear an article of blaze orange clothing while hunting;
ā–ŗ Abide by all conditions of the written permission, the hunter code of practice and the Game and Feral Animal Control Act, its associated Regulation of 2004 and all other legislation.

Contact us to help with all your licensing requirements.
At STS we give you the tactical advantage.

🚨 Written permission conditions changing from next week 🚨

The general written permission conditions will change from next week, giving you more clarity around rules for State forest hunting. These are the standard conditions that apply to all State forest hunting.

Some changes for pig doggers include:
ā–Ŗļø the ability to hunt at night with dogs whilst having a firearm or bows stored securely
ā–Ŗļø no longer required to have UHF radio when hunting at night
ā–Ŗļø can now hunt alone at night with dogs, no longer need to be part of a group.

The conditions also now include information regarding the use of drones while hunting on public land.

It is important that you familiarise yourself with the amended conditions before you head out to hunt. You must also read your written permission carefully for any specific conditions relating to the forest you have booked.

You can read the full written permission conditions on our website –www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/hunting/where-can-i-hunt/permission-conditions-hunting-in-nsw-state-forests.

Please note, written permission conditions published in the NSW Game Hunting Guide are now out of date.

Australian Snakes...

DO NOT try to catch, kill or identify the snake!!! This is important.

The hospitals NO LONGER NEED to know the type of snake; it doesn’t change treatment.

5 years ago a test on the bite, blood or urine to identify the snake so the correct anti venom can be used.
BUT NOW...
This is not done. With the new Antivenom, it neutralises the venoms of all the 5 listed snake genus, so it doesn’t matter what snake bit the patient.

Read that again- one injection for all snakes!
Polyvalent is a one shot wonder, stocked in all hospitals, so most hospitals no longer stock specific Antivenins.

3000 bites are reported annually.
300-500 hospitalisations
2-3 deaths annually.

Average time to death is 12 hours. The urban myth that you are bitten in the yard and die before you can walk from your chook pen back to the house is a load of rubbish.

While not new, the management of snake bite (like a flood/fire evacuation plan or CPR) should be refreshed each season.

Let’s start with a
Basic overview.

There are five genus of snakes that will harm us (seriously)
Browns, Blacks, Adders, Tigers and Taipans.

All snake venom is made up of huge proteins (like egg white). When bitten, a snake injects some venom into the meat of your limb (NOT into your blood).

This venom can not be absorbed into the blood stream from the bite site.

It travels in a fluid transport system in your body called the lymphatic system (not the blood stream).

Now this fluid (lymph) is moved differently to blood.
Your heart pumps blood around, so even when you are lying dead still, your blood still circulates around the body. Lymph fluid is different. It moves around with physical muscle movement like bending your arm, bending knees, wriggling fingers and toes, walking/exercise etc.

Now here is the thing. Lymph fluid becomes blood after these lymph vessels converge to form one of two large vessels (lymphatic trunks)which are connected to veins at the base of the neck.

Back to the snake bite site.
When bitten, the venom has been injected into this lymph fluid (which makes up the bulk of the water in your tissues).

The only way that the venom can get into your blood stream is to be moved from the bite site in the lymphatic vessels. The only way to do this is to physically move the limbs that were bitten.

Stay still!!! Venom can’t move if the victim doesn’t move.
Stay still!!

Remember people are not bitten into their blood stream.

In the 1980s a technique called Pressure immobilisation bandaging was developed to further re**rd venom movement. It completely stops venom /lymph transport toward the blood stream.

A firm roll bandage is applied directly over the bite site (don’t wash the area).

Technique:
Three steps: keep them still
Step 1
Apply a bandage over the bite site, to an area about 10cm above and below the bite.
Step 2:
Then using another elastic roller bandage, apply a firm wrap from Fingers/toes all the way to the armpit/groin.

The bandage needs to be firm, but not so tight that it causes fingers or toes to turn purple or white. About the tension of a sprain bandage.

Step 3:
Splint the limb so the patient can’t walk or bend the limb.

Do nots:
Do not cut, incise or suck the venom.
Do not EVER use a tourniquet
Don’t remove the shirt or pants - just bandage over the top of clothing.
Remember movement (like wriggling out of a shirt or pants) causes venom movement.

Australian snakes tend to have 3 main effects in differing degrees.

Bleeding - internally and bruising.
Muscles paralysed causing difficulty talking, moving & breathing.
Pain
In some snakes severe muscle pain in the limb, and days later the bite site can break down forming a nasty wound.

Allergy to snakes is rarer than winning lotto twice.

Finally: not all bitten people are envenomated and only those starting to show symptoms above are given antivenom.

So look out, be vigilant and if in doubt call us out.
We will safely remove them for you.

Feral cats in Australia
Feral cats threaten the survival of over 100 native species in Australia. They have caused the extinction of some ground-dwelling birds and small to medium-sized mammals. ... They are found all over Australia in all habitats, including forests, woodlands, grasslands, wetlands and arid areas. It's estimated by the CSIRO that feral cats kill 75 million native animals every night across Australia, including birds, frogs, small mammals, and reptiles.
Whilst there is a large population of feral cats in Australia, the extent of damage caused by domestic cats is still prominent. Please ensure you take responsibility and precautions to reduce the likelihood of further destruction to our native wildlife.
