🪃Last term in April, four Year 12 students — Sasha Grogan, Timmirri Grogan, Deshontae Richards and Haylee Highbury — competed in the 2026 Senior Secondary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aspirations Program (ATSIAP) Challenge.

🪃ATSIAP is an academic challenge-based program for eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 10–12 attending Queensland state schools. The program combines cultural strengths with rigorous learning, while developing students’ critical and creative thinking, teamwork, communication and leadership skills.

🪃Throughout the challenge, the team collaborated on a series of creative and analytical tasks, including a visual arts piece titled Mareeba – Meeting of the Waters, Current of Change and a media project exploring the role social media plays in shaping the opinions of Indigenous youth in the region.

🎉Congratulations to the Mareeba State High School team on winning first place in the FNQ Region and earning the opportunity to represent Far North Queensland at the 2026 ATSIAP Senior Secondary State Final in Brisbane!

🎓James Cook University visited MSHS as part of the JCU Incursion Program for our junior secondary students.

📚The program is designed to provide students with exposure to university pathways, future study opportunities, and career planning, while also helping students develop an understanding of university life and post-school options.

💭The program encourages students to reflect on their interests and strengths and encouraged students to consider how their current learning connects to future opportunities. Our students got involved, asked lots of questions and learnt about pathways to university, raising student's aspirations of future education.

⚽Our u15 boys represented Mareeba SHS at the Football Queensland, Peninsula Futsal Championships coming 3rd place out of 9 schools, after losing in the semifinal.

⚽This is a fantastic achievement for the boys in their first FQ carnival together. Enduring 160 minutes of play is a true test of stamina not just a typical futsal/soccer match.

Results:
St Andrews Catholic College, 17-0 W
Bentley Park SHS, 13-1 W
Cairns SHS, 6-3 L
SF: St Augustine's Catholic College, 7-3 L

🫶Thanks to the team for their strong commitment to training and the parents for driving their students all around FNQ to play.

We look forward to the FNQ Schools Championships next term.

Twelve MSHS staff members hit the water on the Barron River to check conditions and ensure everything is ready for our Year 12 Recreation Studies canoe trip on Tuesday 9th.

🛶By scouting the route and identifying any potential hazards, the team has helped set the stage for a safe and memorable experience for our students.

🤩Thanks to our wonderful staff for testing the water for the safety of our students.

✈🛫✈Mareeba SHS students recently visited the Tablelands Aircraft Maintenance (TAM) facility, where they gained valuable insights into how aircraft are designed, maintained, and kept flight-ready to strict safety standards.

🛩Students explored the wide range of career opportunities in aviation, including pathways into pilot training and aircraft engineering while also learning about the qualifications and hands-on training required to enter these fields. The visit was highly engaging and informative, giving students a real-world perspective on STEM career pathways.

🙏Thank you to the Year 11 Science Ambassadors for organising the experience, and a massive thank you to Ben McGilvray from TAM for generously sharing his time, expertise and passion with our students.
