Hey Stephen,
Please find below an update that you can attribute to a Department for Infrastructure and Transport spokesperson.
The barge will be transported in sections to South Australia from Western Australia and will be modified to suit its unique environment before it can begin servicing the community.
Once it arrives in Adelaide, the vessel will take three to four months to construct, cart to site, and launch.
The proposed barge configuration is approximately 36 metres long (excluding the on and off ramps) and 12 metres wide at its widest point, with capacity to accommodate two semi-trailers, one B-Double, or eight four-wheel drive vehicles at a time.
We are currently working through the operational model to determine loading patterns and other details, which we hope to be able to share with the community soon.
It is proposed the barge will be guided by cables and will be pushed back and forth by a tender boat, which is essentially a support vessel, helping to guide the barge and provide the propulsion.
We expect the barge will make up to 18 to 27 crossings each day, supporting the efficient movement of livestock to market and providing for general freight and tourist access.
The Department is currently preparing the access roads to accommodate the vehicles that will transport the barge to site, including cranes and other heavy equipment.
Work to rock low lying areas on the southern approach has begun this week, providing a solid base for traffic.
The northern access track will be widened and re-sheeted in sandy areas to accommodate two-way traffic, with these works due to start later this month.
