Megalong Public School

Megalong Public School Megalong Public School is nestled in the beautiful Megalong Valley. We pride ourselves on being a small school here at Megalong Public School.

This small rural school has provided quality education for over 135 years to the local farming families of the valley. Small schools foster citizenship, leadership, and social emotional skills through increased student engagement. Students at small schools are likely to be highly engaged in their school community, leading to a sense of personal responsibility for the community. Our excellence in s

mall group instruction promotes strong student-teacher relationships which help children feel comfortable taking risks both academically and socially and can lead to greater social-emotional development. This year, with several students now sharing the commute from Blackheath village each day, Megalong Public School has become a more accessible choice for families looking for a small school experience for their child.

This term the Gumnuts are studying the engaging stories of Pamela Allen to introduce Early Stage 1 students to fundamental literacy and creative arts skills. Each lesson combines a shared reading of a Pamela Allen book with simple English activities and a focused, hands-on art project. Students will develop their vocabulary, sequencing, oral language, and drawing/writing skills, while expressing their understanding and imagination through visual arts. The students really enjoyed the first book in the unit, "I Wish I had A Pirate Suit" and we were very proud of their efforts yesterday.

In our Science lesson today we were learning about the importance of clean water to the survival of living things. We experimented with making filters out of natural resources we might find in the bush - pebbles, sand and leaves. The results are in - pebbles did the best job of cleaning the water! The predication made by our students was correct!

HELP US REBUILD OUR SCHOOL SHADE 🌱
After a recent tornado devastated our school grounds, we lost over 40 trees, leaving our students with very limited shade for outdoor learning and play.
We are launching a School Greening & Recovery Project to restore trees, plants, and shaded areas across our playground and learning spaces.
Can you help?
We welcome donations of:
• Trees (native and shade trees)
• Shrubs and plants
• Soil, mulch, and gardening supplies
• Sponsorship or discounts on plants or materials
Why It Matters?
• Shade for children’s health and safety
• Improved biodiversity and school environment
• Hands-on environmental learning for students
• A greener, cooler community space for everyone
Recognition
All supporters will be acknowledged in our newsletter, on our website, and with signage in the garden areas.
