Scammers often impersonate well-known brands using fake SMS sender IDs.

That’s why the SMS Sender ID Register is launching on 1 July 2026.

The register means:

✔️ Only registered sender IDs will display on smart phones
✔️ Unregistered sender IDs will be labelled as ‘Unverified’

Mobile phone networks and wireless devices use low-level radio emissions to send and receive information. These emissions are better known as electromagnetic energy or EME.

We regulate communications devices and equipment that emit EME, to make sure emissions meet strict safety standards set by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency. We conduct site inspections, audit EME site records and undertake measurements.

Follow the link in the comments to try our EME checker and explore measured EME levels at selected mobile phone base station sites across Australia.

Do you send SMS or MMS messages to your customers using your brand or business name?

The way businesses and organisations send branded text messages is changing.

From 1 July 2026, new rules mean that text messages sent with a business or organisation’s name at the top of the message (known as a sender ID) will need to be registered or they will be labelled as ‘unverified’.

The ACMA is launching Australia’s SMS Sender ID Register to help stop scam SMS and MMS messages that pretend to be from real businesses.

To keep sending text messages that show your business or brand name, you’ll need to apply to register with your telco or message provider.

You need to register each Sender ID you use and if you use more than one telco or message provider, you will need to contact them all – the sooner the better.

Register now to avoid disruption to your messages.

Do you send SMS or MMS messages to your customers using your brand or business name?

If your SMS or MMS messages show your brand or business name at the top of the message (instead of a mobile number), you’ll need to register your sender ID now to avoid them being labelled as “Unverified”.

From 1 July 2026, the ACMA is launching Australia’s SMS Sender ID Register to help stop scam messages that pretend to be from real businesses or organisations.

To keep sending SMS messages with your brand or business name after 1 July, you’ll need to apply to register with your telco or message provider.

Without registration, your sender IDs will be replaced with “Unverified” when you send messages and may be mistaken for a scam.
