Seeds of ScienceπŸŒ±πŸ”¬

To celebrate National Science Week, our students created >1,500 native seed bombs using clay, coffee grounds from , Everlasting Daisy and Brachyscome seeds.🌱🌼

Our students learnt how native plants easily adapt, sequester carbon, support pollinators and will bring more colour to our gardens.πŸ¦‹πŸ

We were thrilled to collaborate with St Anne’s Primary School, ResourceSmart Schools, Kew Neighbourhood Learning Centre and Balwyn Rotary, who joined us one lunchtime for seed-bomb making.πŸ«±πŸ½β€πŸ«²πŸΌπŸŒΏ

The fun continued at the end of the week as our Yr.7 students, Enviro Leaders and Head of Science Ms Tilley launched the seed bombs across our gardens. We can’t wait to see them bloom!πŸŒΈπŸ’š

Thank you to Farmwall for helping bring this fun, high-impact science experience to life.πŸŒ±πŸ™πŸΌ Farmwall

From Apprentice to AntarcticaπŸŒβ„οΈ

We love having parents share their career journeys with our students β€” because they are such an important part of the village that helps raise and inspire young people.πŸ«ΆπŸΌπŸ’«

Recently, we welcomed Hamish Allan, an electrician, to share his fascinating career journey, lessons and advice with a packed room of students interested in the electrical industry.βš‘οΈπŸ”§

From being named Victorian Apprentice of the Year to working across major manufacturing facilities, international snow seasons, remote Antarctic stations and some of Melbourne’s most critical infrastructure projects, Hamish demonstrated just how many doors a trade career can open.πŸ”ŒπŸ›£οΈ

Hamish’s key messages included:
πŸ”Ή Be proactive and a self-starter. πŸš€
πŸ”Ή Be willing to work hard and put in the effort.πŸ’ͺ🏽
πŸ”Ή Adaptability is one of the most valuable employability skills.πŸ”„
πŸ”Ή Learn, unlearn and relearn β€” lifelong learning matters.🧠
πŸ”Ή Put your phone away when you’re working, even when you think you can get away with using it!πŸ“΅
πŸ”Ή Get your CPR, White Card and driver’s licence as soon as possible β€” they can help open doors.πŸͺͺ
πŸ”Ή Consider volunteering with organisations such as the CFA or SES to build skills and experience.πŸš’

Industry speakers like Hamish provide students with something that can’t be replicated in a textbook: real-world insight, honest advice and the opportunity to connect with people working in the field they’re considering.
πŸ«±πŸ½β€πŸ«²πŸΌ

Big thank you to Hamish for sharing his journey and inspiring our students to think beyond the traditional pathways and consider where their skills, effort, discipline and curiosity could take them.πŸ‘πŸ½βœˆοΈπŸŽ‡πŸŒ‰

Art Camp 2026: Simon Normand Workshop🎨✨

Our recent Art Camp that’s held annually continued to inspire over two incredible days, giving students the opportunity to collaborate with acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Simon Normand.🎨🌿 Known for his work as a sculptor, printmaker, photographer, author and environmentalist, Simon is celebrated for his large-scale public artworks, mosaic installations and environmentally themed projects.🐨🌏

Working under Simon’s expert guidance, our students created Fragile, a stunning mosaic that will become a permanent feature at our school’s front entrance.🧩✨ Featuring a beautiful pygmy possum set against a shimmering night sky filled with Bogong moths, the artwork is a powerful celebration of Australia’s unique wildlife and a reminder of the importance of protecting our natural environment.πŸπŸŒ™

Throughout the project, students embraced the opportunity to learn new techniques, collaborate with one another and contribute to a meaningful artwork that will be enjoyed by our school community for years to come. The excitement and pride were evident as the mosaic gradually came to life, piece by piece. ✨🧩

A huge thank you to Simon for sharing his experience, creativity and passion with our students.πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ™πŸ½πŸŽ¨ We are incredibly proud of this lasting legacy and can’t wait to officially unveil Fragile to our community.πŸ’šπŸ«

Bee The Change🐝 🌏

Last week, the Kew Eco Crew hosted a Beeswax Wrap Making Workshop, teaching Kew High students and our visiting staff and students from Soja, Japan, how to create their own reusable food wraps. These are great for covering a bowl of leftovers, wrapping a sandwich, half an avocado or piece of cheese!πŸ₯ͺπŸ§€

Our Japanese friends thoroughly enjoyed learning about this simple alternative to single-use plastic, getting hands-on with the process and making a wrap to take home to Japan. πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅πŸ€

Beeswax wraps are made from natural materials and provide a reusable, flexible alternative to plastic wrap, helping reduce household and school plastic waste.πŸ—‘οΈ

Special thanks to our Eco Crew students, who spent lunchtime teaching KHS and Japanese students, and who even made 15 beeswax wraps in advance to ensure every Japanese student and staff member could take one home.πŸ«ΆπŸ’š

It’s a great reminder that small, practical actions can create a big impact when we share ideas, learn from one another and take action for the health of us humans and all life on earth.πŸŒπŸπŸ’›

What A Showβ€ΌπŸ€©βœ¨πŸŽ¬πŸ”₯

Congratulations to everyone involved in the outstanding production of Chicago at . πŸŽπŸ‘ From the moment the curtain rose to the final applause, the talent, dedication, and professionalism on display were truly remarkable.πŸŒŸπŸ‘

Our students shone brightly both on and off the stage. The cast delivered exceptional performances, bringing energy, confidence, and character to every scene. The musicians showcased incredible skill and musicianship, providing the driving force behind this iconic score.🎢 Meanwhile, the crew worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure every technical element came together seamlessly.πŸ”ˆ

Productions of this calibre are only possible through the commitment of a dedicated team, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed their time, expertise, and support throughout the journey.πŸ™β€οΈ Thanks especially to KHS alumni Charlotte Lincoln, Finnegan Comte-Harvey & Sarah Hibberd for using their expertise in dance, lighting and sound to bring our show to life.πŸ’ƒπŸ’‘

An ENORMOUS thank you and highest praise to Michael Brandt, Stuart Crawford, Sophie Thomas, Kylie Kollmorgen, Ken Gardner, Martin Corcoran & Ben Carter for their outstanding leadership, guidance, and countless hours of work in helping bring this production to life.πŸ‘βš“πŸ’«

Exploring Trade PathwaysπŸ› οΈπŸ§±πŸ”Œ

Recently, some of our Year 10 students with an interest in trade careers had the opportunity to β€œtaste” a range of hands-on pathways, including electrical, bricklaying, plumbing, building and welding.βš‘πŸ”¨β˜€οΈ

Through practical activities and valuable industry insights, students gained a deeper understanding of the skills, career pathways and day-to-day expectations of working in the technical trades.πŸ§°πŸ‘·πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈπŸšœ

With strong demand for skilled tradespeople across Australia, these pathways offer excellent employment opportunities, job security and the chance to build rewarding and successful careers.πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ“ˆπŸ›£οΈ

Our students learnt that 50% of what they learn in one trade is actually transferable to other trades.πŸ§‘πŸΎβ€πŸ”§πŸ—οΈπŸͺ

Experiences like these (big thanks to Swinburne Uni!) are critical in helping our students make informed decisions about their future.πŸͺœπŸ’🦺
