Its important that support workers understand what makes a difference in peoples lives. We asked Leo what he thinks is makes the greatest difference for the people he supports.

He said he believes it's patience and empathy. Every participant has their own pace, challenges, and way of communicating. He knows that his patience allows him to understand people he supports without pressure. Empathy helps him see things from their perspective.

We often get told that connecting with community is very important for our wellbeing, but what can that actually look like?

Here are some ideas on how you might be able to connect with your community.

-Joining an interest or hobby group: check out your local community spaces and see what groups meet up that you might want to visit!

- Local Events: Sometimes justs going to something interesting in your community can help you feel more connected to it!

-Say Hello: It can be daunting to strike up a conversation with someone you don't know, but sometimes even just a little hello or wave can helps us feel apart of the same community as the people around us!

-Volunteer: There are many roles that you may be able to try helping out with to support your community.

[ Image description:
Image is a pale pink poster titled: Connect with Community. There is the Grace Recovery Hub logo next to the title. the logo is a green silhouette of a person jumping up and touching some yellow stars.

Text reads:
When the world feels too big, and too frightening; connecting with our community around us helps us feel less alone or overwhelmed

Join An interest group:
Local libraries and community spaces have many groups each week for lots of different interests and hobbies.

Find local events: There are many free events both in person and online. See if there are any happening that look like fun!

Say hello: Take the time to say hello to someone, maybe a neighbour or someone who you see often when at your favourite cafe but don’t speak to.

If you have capacity, doing things with volunteer groups can help us connect with our communities in very meaningful ways

Volunteer: If you have capacity, doing things with volunteer groups can help us connect with our communities in very meaningful ways
end text.

Next to each example there is a drawing that represents that idea.
Interest group has drawings of a game controller, paint supplies, book and plant.
Local events has an image of a calendar with a red circle around one day.
Say hello has two speech bubbles with smily faces on them.

Volunteer has peoples hands reaching out with hearts around them.

There are so many moments in their role that support workers deeply value and respect. Where we can see that impact that having support can make on someones lives.

Yvonne said that the times thats she can see that she is helping a person feel confident, included and connected, reminds her why she chose to be a support worker. As this is one of those moments that she deeply respects.

Doom Scrolling can trap us in very dysregulating loop! Many of the sites that we use want us to keep on using them and use our big feelings to stop us from walking away.

If you find yourself doom scrolling, try to take a break with these alternatives!

[Image Description:

Poster is a informational one, with 4 sections of text that flow from top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right.

Text reads:

Doomscrolling?
try these instead

Move your body: Go for a walk, Dance, Do some stretches, Ride a bike, Play around.
Learn Something New

Learn Something new: Watch a tutorial, listen to a podcast, practice a new skill, try making a new recipe, Read something.

Connect with Others: Do something kind, Call a loved one, schedule to hang out with someone.
Make Something: Draw, Paint, Woodwork, Lego, Playdough, Crochet, Gardening, Puzzles, Repairing, Upcyling.

Signs You May Be Doomscrolling:
Your heart beats faster while you scroll, but you can't stop.
You feel drained or anxious afterwards rather than relaxed.
You lose track of time and suddenly realize hours have vanished.

Doomscrolling is when you are endlessly scrolling through negative news or social media feeds, even when it makes you feel worse.

Doing things that give your brain a feeling of novelty and completion can help make social media less appealing to our brains, especially when we are seeing lots of upsetting things there.

We asked Leo what he wished the wider community truly
understood about support workers?

He said that he believes that "there can sometimes be misconceptions that support work is easy, passive, or not impactful. In reality, it requires responsibility, emotional awareness, and adaptability. It is a role that supports real change and long-term outcomes in people’s lives."
