Meet Joanne – a registered disability support worker based in the Bass Coast Shire of Gippsland.

She qualified for registration with a Certificate IV in Disability Support, a Certificate IV in Education Support and a Certificate III in Community Services. She has 10 years’ experience as an education support officer at a specialist school and now works as a self‑employed disability support worker with a current NDIS worker screening clearance. She has also undertaken training in Advanced Personal Care and Emergency Asthma Management.

This week is National Reconciliation Week (NRW).

A time to learn about shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to reflect on the ongoing work of creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The theme for NRW 2026 is ‘All In’ — a call for wholehearted commitment to reconciliation every day. It reminds us that reconciliation requires action and shared responsibility, and that lasting change will not happen without all of us.

Registered disability workers must complete at least 10 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) each registration period.

CPD helps workers keep their knowledge current and maintain the skills needed to provide safe, high-quality support.

CPD activities should build on your existing skills, relate to your area of practice, and support you to practise safely.

Today is IDAHOBIT—International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia.

The Victorian Disability Worker Commission supports safe, respectful and inclusive services for everyone. This includes recognising the diverse identities of people with disability.

At the Commission, we promote and uphold the Disability Service Safeguards, including the Code of Conduct, which sets clear expectations for how disability workers must behave. These expectations are underpinned by the core principles every worker must uphold: Respect. Quality. Safety.
