Australian plants have evolved with fire, but climate change is shifting the balance. 🔥🌱

In a recent interview with ABC Australia, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria's Dr Rebecca Miller highlights the challenge facing many threatened species:

"With climate change, there's a shift in terms of the frequency and intensity and probably extent and scale of fires, which is problematic when you're working with threatened species that might have really restricted distributions and narrow ranges."

From seed banking and conservation research to establishing new populations of threatened species, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria is helping ensure Victoria's unique flora can persist in an increasingly fire-prone future. With collections from more than 1,500 species, this work is a vital part of safeguarding biodiversity.

🌸🚨 The blossoms are coming 🚨🌸

𝘗𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘹 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘢𝘮 ‘Okame’ might just be the first of our cherry blossoms to open up as we head into spring!

A hybrid of 𝘗𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘢 (Fuji cherry) and 𝘗𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢 (Taiwan cherry), this particular cultivar is named after the traditional Japanese cultural figure ‘Okame’ who signifies longevity, joy and good fortune.

Hands up, who’s taking this energy into spring?! 🙋🙋🙋

You’re never sitting alone at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria 💚

Housing 180 years of history, stories and magnificent nature, the Gardens are a special place for many of us. One of the most heart-felt ways to immortalise a memory here is through our incredible Seat Dedication program.

While the spreading of ashes is prohibited at Melbourne and Cranbourne Gardens, a tribute plaque on one of our seats is a wonderful way to honour a special person, celebrate a milestone or preserve a treasured memory.

Wattle you be doing 1 September ?! Join us at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne for a series FREE National Wattle Day walks! 🚶

Immerse yourself in the beauty of Australia’s iconic flower and explore a diverse collection of wattles from every state—some rare and unusual—which will captivate your senses.

As it’s still National Science Week, we also have to shoutout the incredible research that has gone into understanding our national floral emblem…

In 2022, scientists at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria sequenced the genome of the golden wattle (𝘈𝘤𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘢 𝘱𝘺𝘤𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘢), for the first time. Put simply, this means our team, alongside contributors from around the country, worked to understand the building blocks that make the golden wattle, well…a golden wattle!

It’s DNA was sequenced into millions of fragments, then assembled like a giant jigsaw puzzle using high-performance computing housed in the National Herbarium of Victoria.

The golden wattle genome was found to be made of 814 million DNA bases (the ‘letters’ that make up DNA) and included nearly 48,000 genes. In comparison, humans have larger genomes with 3.1 billion bases of DNA but fewer (~20,000) genes.

“[Raising Rarity] helped me realise this is what I want to do forever.” 🥹

This National Science Week, meet Matilda Wallace. A 14-year-old whose passion for botanicals has flourished as she takes her education beyond the classroom and into orchid translocation projects returning rare and threatened species to the wild!

The catalyst? Raising Rarity. An RBGV school program connecting students with the conservation of rare and threatened Victorian plant species.

If Matilda's enthusiasm is anything to go by, the future of plant conservation is in very capable hands 🌏

Based in the National Herbarium of Victoria, our science team are a mighty and world-renowned force when it comes to botanical research.

Is it just us or can a plant’s common name be deceiving sometimes? 😅😂

Soft to the touch and with grey-green foliage, the 𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘪 (Flannel flower) is an iconic native wildflower that is a special sight to see.

Laying dormant as seeds, this species requires bushfire smoke, followed by rain, before it can come to life as blooms!

But wait, there’s more! Its velvety petals? Actually modified leaves. Its daisy-like shape? Actually in the same family as carrots and parsley 🥕
