A celebration worth waiting for!

After a few weeks of postponement due to a COVID outbreak, our Woornack team was finally able to come together to celebrate Aged Care Employee Day.

Joining the celebration were Michelle Dervan, General Manager People and Culture, and Leena Binil, Resident Services Manager, who helped recognise the dedication of our staff, including team members celebrating long-service milestones.

There were certificates, gifts, plenty of food, cake and a chance to enjoy the occasion together.

A little late, but our appreciation for the Woornack team is always right on time. Thank you for everything you do.

A special delivery of 123 letters has brought smiles and a touch of homework to our Footscray home.

Through a wonderful new intergenerational partnership with Footscray Primary School, Year 1 and 2 students put their classroom learning into practice by writing letters to our residents.

The initiative blends literacy with community connection, as the school explained:

“This term, the students are learning to write for authentic purposes as part of our ‘writing to transact’ unit, and our inquiry focus is ‘Places Have a Story.’ We believe a wonderful way to bring this learning to life would be for our students to write letters to some of your residents, allowing them to learn about people's experiences and how places and communities have changed over time.”

The children filled their notes with vibrant drawings, personal stories, and plenty of curious questions. One letter even gave residents a laugh, opening with the big question: “67 67 67, do you know what it is?”

Our residents have embraced the project with enthusiasm, carefully reading each message and getting busy with their replies. Beyond answering questions and sharing their own life stories, they are sending warm messages back, including touching notes like, “I hope I get to meet you one day.”

Hugo doesn't do sitting still.

Every morning at our Footscray Home, he’s up doing the paper rounds for his neighbours, running the 22-person footy tipping comp, and helping translate for Spanish-speaking residents. 📰

A workplace accident in the '80s permanently damaged his eyesight, but Hugo never let that slow him down. Today, when he’s not keeping the home in order, he’s out taking Korean language classes and brushing up on his tech skills at Footscray Library.

🎉 Celebrating Our Footscray Team on Aged Care Employee Day! 💙

Last week, our Home gathered for a special ceremony honouring our dedicated service award recipients alongside our residents and staff.

We were delighted to welcome Justine Heath (Board Deputy Chair) and Jeremy Jones (Chief Financial Officer). Facility Manager Edward and Justine opened the event, with Edward sharing heartfelt personal stories for each recipient.

Last week our Avondale Heights community came together to celebrate and honour the incredible people who make a difference in the lives of our residents every single day.

Our Chairman, Scott Chapman AM, joined the team to present certificates of appreciation and cut a celebratory cake with staff. Surrounded by a wall full of thank-you stars written by colleagues, residents, and families, the day was a beautiful reminder of the compassion, dedication, and heart our team brings to Doutta Galla. 🙌✨

Today Friday 7 August is Aged Care Employee Day, a chance to celebrate the incredible people who care for and support older Australians every day.

At Doutta Galla, we’re marking the week across all our Homes and services, recognising 65 employees and 5 volunteers for service milestones, including 15 years for 15 staff, 20 years for 7 staff, and an outstanding 30 years from Tracy Bingham at Grantham Green. CEO Glenn Rappensberg joined in the celebrations at Grantham Green, sharing in the appreciation for staff and volunteers across the community.

He said:

“Your compassion, care and commitment are at the heart of everything we do at Doutta Galla.”

“Thank you for all you do, on behalf of the Board and Executive Team, and most importantly our residents and their families.”

🐾 Special Visitors at Harmony Village! 🐾

We had the absolute pleasure of hosting the Year 11 students from Notre Dame College Shepparton, along with their wonderful support dog, Poppy! 🐶

It was a fantastic day filled with great conversations, shared stories, a game or two of pool 🎱, delicious treats, and plenty of tail wags and cuddles from Poppy. Seeing the intergenerational connections and smiles around our community truly brightened everyone's day. ❤️

A huge thank you to the students and staff at Notre Dame for visiting and bringing so much joy to our residents! 😊👋

For Loneliness Awareness Week (3-9 August 2026), we’re sharing a special story from our Lynch’s Bridge residence in Kensington!

When volunteer Grace moved to Melbourne, she missed having older adults in her life. Through the Red Cross Aged Care Volunteer Scheme, she was paired with our lovely resident, Pam. The secret spark that brought them together? A shared love for the music of Prince! 🎵✨🕺

What started as a tentative first visit has grown into a cherished friendship filled with laughter, shared stories, and genuine companionship. As Pam says, "It makes such a world of difference... it brightens up my day."

Did you know that 1 in 2 Australians experience social disconnection, and that regular volunteering and social connection significantly lower the risk of loneliness? Small moments of connection create a massive ripple effect in our communities.
