Senator Michaelia Cash — Senator for Western Australia, Shadow Attorney-General and Leader of the Opposition in the Senate — and Cindy McLeish MP State Member for Eildon in the Victorian Parliament, have both called out the disgraceful scenes at a Melbourne sporting fixture.

Their message is clear: this behaviour is unacceptable — and Football Victoria's fines and points deduction against Preston Lions FC reflect that.

Racism, hate, misogyny and violence have no place in our society. Neither does disruptive, antisocial conduct at what should be a family sport. Preston Lions have now recorded their second strike out of three in under 12 months.

The message is simple: clean it up — or face the consequences. Three strikes, and you're out.

"Ilinden Uprising" - What unbiased sources say really happened!

PART 2 of 5: IMRO — The Bulgarian Committee Behind Ilinden

The organisation that staged the 1903 uprising was IMRO — the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation, founded in Thessaloniki in 1893. Its leaders and members were drawn overwhelmingly from the Bulgarian Exarchate's own school and church network built after 1870. Gotse Delchev, IMRO's most famous leader, is described by Encyclopaedia Britannica as someone who "seems to have identified himself as a Bulgarian."

IMRO's public slogan was "autonomy" for Macedonia — not outright union with Bulgaria. That wasn't idealism. It was strategy. After Berlin reversed San Stefano in 1878, the Great Powers would never have tolerated Sofia simply annexing Macedonia outright. "Autonomy" was the version of the plan that might actually survive European diplomacy.

Meanwhile a second, more explicit faction operated openly from Sofia: the Supreme Macedonian-Adrianople Committee, the "Supremists," working with covert backing from the Bulgarian government itself and pushing straightforwardly for annexation.

Two wings, one destination. This is the organisation that, in August 1903, launched an uprising still being rebranded today as the birth of a separate "Macedonian" nation. Next: what actually happened on the ground.

Last weekend, Assistant Minister Ged Kearney stood with Preston Lions FC, personally congratulating the club on its 2026 Dockerty Cup win and praising the way "local sporting clubs... bring people together, build community."

Three weeks earlier, on 18 July, banners reading "GREEK CHICKS HAIRY T**S" and "ANTI-HELLASS" were held up by Preston Lions supporters at their match against South Melbourne Hellas — a sexualised, misogynistic attack on Greek women and girls, in front of families and children. On 22 July, our Association wrote to Ms Kearney directly, as a listed Presidents Club sponsor of the club, asking her to publicly condemn the conduct and to clarify whether she would continue that sponsorship while Football Victoria's investigation remained open. We have received no response, and no public condemnation.

Football Victoria's own sanction — two home games played behind closed doors — has already come and gone. The investigation Ms Kearney was asked to wait on is still unresolved. And yet there she was, in club colours, celebrating on the pitch, without a word about the community she was asked to answer to.

This is not what accountability looks like. If Ms Kearney is comfortable enough to stand with this club publicly, she should be equally comfortable answering, publicly, the questions our Association put to her in writing: does she condemn what happened on 18 July, and does she still consider her sponsorship appropriate while it remains unresolved?

Until we hear that answer, this silence speaks for itself — and it is a bitter disappointment to every Greek Australian family who expected better.

"Ilinden Uprising" - What unbiased sources say really happened!

PART 1 of 5: 1870 — Where the Real Story Begins

Every account Skopje tells of Ilinden starts in 1903. The real story starts 33 years earlier, and it isn't Greek propaganda — it's diplomatic record.

In 1870, under sustained Russian pressure, the Ottoman Sultan issued a firman creating the Bulgarian Exarchate: a church breaking away from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, which had represented Balkan Orthodox Christians — Greek and Slav alike — for centuries. This wasn't a theological split. It was a claiming mechanism. Whichever village's clergy "chose" the Exarchate over the Patriarchate was, from that point forward, administratively counted as Bulgarian: Bulgarian-language schools, Bulgarian textbooks, a Bulgarian national register. Encyclopaedia Britannica's own entries on Bulgarian history treat the Exarchate's creation as the acknowledged starting point of the modern "Macedonian Question" — not a Greek framing, a standard one in Western reference works.

Eight years later, the mechanism paid off — briefly. The 1878 Treaty of San Stefano, imposed by Russia on a defeated Ottoman Empire, created a "Greater Bulgaria" swallowing nearly all of Macedonia. Britain and Austria-Hungary, alarmed at a Russian client state dominating the Balkans, forced it back off the map within months at the Congress of Berlin. This is not contested history; it's in every standard European diplomatic history of the period. But the goal Berlin blocked didn't disappear — it went underground, into schools, church registers, and eventually armed committees.

From the 1870s through the 1890s, Macedonia became the site of a quiet but intense contest: rival Greek (Patriarchist) and Bulgarian (Exarchist) school and church networks, each competing for the religious and educational allegiance — and therefore the recorded nationality — of the same Slavic-speaking Orthodox villages. American and British scholarship on this period (see, for instance, Duncan M. Perry's Duke University Press study of the Macedonian revolutionary movements) treats this church-and-schoolroom rivalry as the direct institutional precursor to the armed organizations that followed. It was in this environment — not a spontaneous 1903 national awakening — that the organization behind Ilinden was born.

*A response to Football Victoria's statement on the Preston Lions sanctions*

Football Victoria has released its update on Saturday's conduct, with initial sanctions attached. Of the three responses we've now reviewed — Nathan Lambert MP, Assistant Minister Ged Kearney, and now FV — this is the one backed by the most concrete action. That deserves to be said plainly, alongside where it still doesn't go far enough.

**What they got right**

FV didn't soften the language. They called Saturday's scenes "utterly disgraceful" and committed to acting "decisively to protect the wider community" against what they term a small minority using football as a platform for vilification. Crucially, they backed that language with something Lambert and Kearney did not: real, immediate sanctions. Preston Lions' next two NPL home fixtures — against Bentleigh Greens and Green Gully, along with the Women's and U23 matches that precede them — will be played behind closed doors, no spectators. The matter has also been referred to the independent FV Tribunal, with financial penalties, points deductions and match restrictions explicitly on the table, and further action under the Three Strike Policy still under consideration. They also thanked the community members who supplied evidence to the investigation — an acknowledgment that our community's persistence in documenting and reporting this has directly shaped the outcome. And the closing line is one we want to see repeated by everyone who comments on this: "If individuals cannot uphold the standards expected of our football community, they should step away from it."

**Where it fell short**

For all of that, FV's statement never once names what this actually was. It speaks throughout of "vilification," "division" and a "small minority," but at no point does it say the words Greek, Greek Victorians, or misogyny — despite the fact that our formal letter to FV's Integrity & Compliance Unit set out precisely what was displayed and asked FV to confirm this would be treated as vilification, both racial/ethnic and gender-based, not generic anti-social conduct. Nathan Lambert MP managed to say plainly who was targeted. FV, the body actually running the investigation, has so far chosen not to.

The statement also doesn't engage with the pattern. This is the third documented incident involving Preston Lions supporters in just over a year, and FV's own enforcement history includes a real inconsistency our community has already raised directly with them: Oakleigh Cannons were required to remove a Greek flag in September 2025, while reported breaches by Preston Lions supporters around the same period went unaddressed. A genuine accounting of this pattern — and of FV's own uneven enforcement of it — is missing.

Finally, the sanctions announced so far sit at the club level. There's no confirmation of what happens to the individuals already identified as responsible, no timeline for when the Tribunal will report, and no detail on what preventative measures — proper bag checks, banner screening — will apply at ordinary matches going forward, rather than just the enhanced security reserved for the marquee Dockerty Cup Final.

**What we still want to see**

We are asking FV to confirm, in writing, that this investigation and any Tribunal outcome will be recorded as vilification — racial and gender-based — not filed away as generic misconduct the way the September 2025 incident was. We want individual consequences for those already identified, not only fixture restrictions that affect the whole club. We want a firm date for the Tribunal's findings and for a decision under the Three Strike Policy. And we want an honest account of why a club with three documented incidents in thirteen months, and a supporter base that has repeatedly targeted our community, was allowed to reach a third strike before action of this scale was taken.

Real sanctions are a start most other responses this week haven't matched. Now we want the finding to match the sanction: name what this was, and hold the individuals — not just the fixture list — to account.

Μιλά σε όλη της την έκταση για «προσβολή», «διχασμό» και «μικρή μειοψηφία», αλλά πουθενά δεν λέει τις λέξεις Έλληνες, Έλληνες Βικτωριανοί, ή μισογυνισμός — παρόλο που η επίσημη επιστολή μας προς τη Μονάδα Ακεραιότητας & Συμμόρφωσης της FV περιέγραφε με ακρίβεια τι είχε επιδειχθεί και ζητούσε από την FV να επιβεβαιώσει ότι αυτό θα αντιμετωπιστεί ως προσβολή, τόσο φυλετική/εθνοτική όσο και έμφυλη, όχι ως γενική αντικοινωνική συμπεριφορά. Ο Nathan Lambert MP κατάφερε να πει ξεκάθαρα ποιοι στοχοποιήθηκαν. Η FV, ο φορέας που διεξάγει πραγματικά την έρευνα, μέχρι στιγμής έχει επιλέξει να μην το κάνει.

Η δήλωση δεν ασχολείται επίσης με το μοτίβο. Και θέλουμε μια ειλικρινή εξήγηση για το γιατί ένα σωματείο με τρία τεκμηριωμένα περιστατικά μέσα σε δεκατρείς μήνες, και μια βάση οπαδών που έχει επανειλημμένα στοχοποιήσει την κοινότητά μας, επιτράπηκε να φτάσει σε τρίτο παράπτωμα πριν ληφθεί δράση αυτής της κλίμακας.

A response to Assistant Minister Ged Kearney's statement on the Preston Lions incident

Assistant Minister Ged Kearney has also put out a statement on Saturday's conduct at Preston Lions. We've read it closely, and we want to be fair about what's there — while being honest that, next to Nathan Lambert MP's statement, it falls short in a way that matters.

What she got right

She didn't equivocate on the substance of what misogyny is. As Assistant Minister for Social Services and the Prevention of Family Violence, she made a point worth repeating: misogyny is never harmless, it is not banter, and when it goes unchallenged it becomes easier to accept — with real consequences for women. She closed by speaking directly to women: that no one should be expected to tolerate abuse because of who they are, and that they deserve to feel safe and respected. That's a genuine and important message. She also acknowledged Nathan Lambert MP by name for speaking out.

Where it fell short

Here is the gap that actually matters to us: Assistant Minister Kearney is listed as a Presidents Club sponsor of Preston Lions FC. Her statement condemns the conduct, but it does not once mention what she intends to do about her own club sponsorship. Words are not the same as walking away. If misogyny of this severity — banners of the kind displayed on Saturday — isn't enough to make a sponsor reconsider their support, then no standard is actually being set. An Assistant Minister of the Crown is in a genuine position to lead by example here: to say plainly that her support is being withdrawn, and to make that withdrawal conditional on proof of real change. She didn't do that.

The statement also reads as though this were a single, isolated incident — something that happened once, was handled, and is now being responded to. It wasn't. This is the third documented incident involving Preston Lions supporters in just over a year, and our community has raised concerns about this club's supporter culture for years before that. Treating it as a one-off lets the club off the hook for a pattern, and it tells our community that the scale of what we've actually been dealing with isn't being taken on board.

And then there is the club's own statement, which we've now had a chance to review. It is clear the club hasn't actually absorbed what happened here. There is no apology in it. There is no real commitment to make things better — only a statement that they didn't like the behaviour and will "work on" it not happening again. That is a surface-level response, and it contains no acknowledgment whatsoever of the deeper, grassroots problem within its own supporter base that has now produced this three times over. A club that has genuinely learned something says sorry, to the people it harmed, specifically. This one didn't.

What we still want to see

We are asking the Assistant Minister to officially and publicly withdraw her support for Preston Lions FC, and to say clearly that misogyny in any form, at any level, will not be tolerated. We are also asking her to look squarely at the gap between what her own statement called for and what the club has actually delivered — a statement with no apology and no real plan — and to act on that gap, not let it pass quietly. That withdrawal of support should stay in place until Preston Lions can demonstrate, over time, that it has genuinely addressed the culture within its supporter base — not with a single statement, but with proof that our community, the Greek community specifically, can attend matches without fear of being targeted again.

If she does not act on this, she is enabling this behaviour by her silence and her continued association with this club. And if this happens again — and on this record, it will — that will not just be a failure of a football club. It will be remembered as a failure of political leadership: a moment when someone with real standing and a real platform did not have the courage to stand up for our community when misogyny was directed squarely at us.

Της ζητάμε επίσης να κοιτάξει κατάματα το χάσμα ανάμεσα σε όσα ζητούσε η ίδια της η δήλωση και σε όσα πραγματικά παρέδωσε το σωματείο — μια δήλωση χωρίς συγγνώμη και χωρίς πραγματικό σχέδιο — και να ενεργήσει βάσει αυτού του χάσματος, όχι να το αφήσει να περάσει σιωπηλά. Και αν αυτό ξανασυμβεί — και με βάση αυτό το ιστορικό, θα ξανασυμβεί — αυτό δεν θα είναι απλώς αποτυχία ενός ποδοσφαιρικού σωματείου. Θα μείνει στη μνήμη ως αποτυχία πολιτικής ηγεσίας: μια στιγμή όπου κάποιος με πραγματικό κύρος και πραγματικό βήμα δεν είχε το θάρρος να σταθεί υπέρ της κοινότητάς μας όταν ο μισογυνισμός στράφηκε ευθέως εναντίον μας.

A response to Nathan Lambert MP's statement on the Preston Lions incident

Nathan Lambert MP, Member for Preston and Reservoir, has put out a public statement on Saturday's conduct by a section of Preston Lions supporters. We've gone through it carefully. There's real substance here — and there are gaps we need to name.

WHAT HE GOT RIGHT

He called it what it is. He didn't dance around the banners — he named them as racist and misogynistic, and specifically directed at Greek Victorians and Greek Victorian women. That matters. He confirmed the individuals involved have been identified, that the club is expected to release a statement setting out consequences, and that Football Victoria will announce disciplinary action next week. He pointed to the state's own strengthened vilification laws — the ones that make racial and gender-based vilification a criminal offence in serious cases, with potential jail terms — and to reforms targeting the anonymous "ultras" accounts that circulated this material in the first place. We want to be clear about this: putting your name and your face on a video, on the record, addressing this directly is not nothing. We acknowledge that Mr Lambert has taken this seriously, and we don't say that lightly.

WHAT NEEDS MORE COMMITMENT

Then the statement pivots, and this is where we were left dissappointed. A large part of it is spent placing last Saturday's conduct inside a decades-long history of "intra-European rivalries" in Victorian soccer — Serbian and Croatian kids egged on by adults, a culture he admits he once romanticised as "authentic working-class multiculturalism." He's right to walk that back. But even in walking it back, the framing still does some of the same work: it turns a targeted act — Preston Lions supporters vilifying Greek Victorians, specifically Greek women — into a story about generic "tribal conflict between communities," where responsibility gets shared out across an old rivalry rather than sitting squarely where it belongs. Mr Lambert himself draws the distinction: "the clubs might be that, but the conflict is not." We'd ask him to extend that same clarity to the language around consequences: this wasn't mutual rivalry escalating between two sides. It was one club's supporters targeting our community.

The other gap is specificity. "Very serious consequences," "further disciplinary action" — these are promises to be named later, not commitments made now. This is the third documented incident involving Preston Lions supporters in just over a year, and the last time Football Victoria acted, the sanction was framed around flares and unsafe conduct — not vilification. We'll be watching closely to see whether next week's announcement actually treats this as what it is.

WHAT WE WANT TO SEE

Taking it seriously on camera is a start. It is not the finish line. A statement, however direct, is not the same as consequences. This club has lost its right to uniform, unquestioning support from political and business associations alike. That support should not resume as though nothing happened — it needs to be withdrawn and stay withdrawn until there is long-term, demonstrated evidence that real cultural change has taken hold at Preston Lions: not a press release, not a single disciplinary outcome, but a sustained, proven shift away from a supporter culture that has produced three documented incidents in just over a year, into a club that stands for collaboration between communities rather than animosity toward one of them.

That standard applies to sponsors. It applies to Football Victoria. And, respectfully, it applies to the political figures who represent this club's home ground. Continuing to stand by Preston Lions without that proof is not neutral — it is an endorsement of what's been allowed to fester there, whatever the intent behind it. We don't believe that's Mr Lambert's intent. But intent isn't what protects our community. Distance, and proof of change, is.

We thank Mr Lambert for speaking on the record and for backing it with reference to real legislative tools. We now ask him, and everyone else who has engaged with us on this, to match that seriousness with the one thing that actually changes behaviour: making support conditional, and keeping it withdrawn until it's earned back.

Δεν απέφυγε να μιλήσει για τα πανό — τα χαρακτήρισε ρατσιστικά και μισογυνιστικά, στοχευμένα ειδικά κατά Ελλήνων Βικτωριανών και ιδίως Ελληνίδων γυναικών της Βικτώριας. Αυτό έχει σημασία. Επιβεβαίωσε ότι τα εμπλεκόμενα άτομα έχουν εντοπιστεί, ότι το σωματείο αναμένεται να εκδώσει ανακοίνωση με τις συνέπειες, και ότι η Football Victoria θα ανακοινώσει πειθαρχική δράση την επόμενη εβδομάδα. Αναφέρθηκε στους ενισχυμένους νόμους περί ρατσιστικής προσβολής της πολιτείας — αυτούς που καθιστούν τη ρατσιστική και έμφυλη προσβολή ποινικό αδίκημα σε σοβαρές περιπτώσεις, με ενδεχόμενες ποινές φυλάκισης — και σε μεταρρυθμίσεις που στοχεύουν τους ανώνυμους λογαριασμούς «ultras» που κυκλοφόρησαν αυτό το υλικό. Θέλουμε να είμαστε ξεκάθαροι σε αυτό: το να βάζεις το όνομά σου και το πρόσωπό σου σε ένα βίντεο, δημοσίως, αντιμετωπίζοντας αυτό το ζήτημα άμεσα, δεν είναι τίποτα ασήμαντο. Αναγνωρίζουμε ότι ο κ. Lambert το αντιμετώπισε με σοβαρότητα, και δεν το λέμε αυτό επιπόλαια.

**Πού δεν έφτασε αρκετά μακριά**

Στη συνέχεια όμως η δήλωση στρέφεται αλλού, και εδώ διαφωνούμε. Μεγάλο μέρος της αφιερώνεται στο να εντάξει τη συμπεριφορά του Σαββάτου μέσα σε μια δεκαετιών ιστορία «ενδοευρωπαϊκών αντιπαλοτήτων» στο ποδόσφαιρο της Βικτώριας — Σέρβικα και Κροατικά παιδιά κάτω των 12 ή 14 ετών να υποκινούνται από μεγαλύτερα μέλη των συλλόγων τους, μια κουλτούρα την οποία παραδέχεται ότι κάποτε εξιδανίκευε ως «αυθεντική εργατική πολυπολιτισμικότητα». Έχει δίκιο που το αναθεωρεί. Όμως ακόμα και αναθεωρώντας το, η ίδια η διατύπωση κάνει εν μέρει την ίδια δουλειά: μετατρέπει μια στοχευμένη πράξη — οπαδούς της Preston Lions να προσβάλλουν Έλληνες Βικτωριανούς, και ειδικότερα Ελληνίδες γυναίκες — σε μια ιστορία γενικής «φυλετικής σύγκρουσης μεταξύ κοινοτήτων», όπου η ευθύνη μοιράζεται σε μια παλιά αντιπαλότητα αντί να πέφτει ακριβώς εκεί που ανήκει. Ο ίδιος ο κ. Lambert κάνει τη διάκριση: «τα σωματεία μπορεί να είναι αυτό, η σύγκρουση όμως όχι». Θα του ζητούσαμε να επεκτείνει την ίδια σαφήνεια και στη γλώσσα γύρω από τις συνέπειες: αυτό δεν ήταν αμοιβαία αντιπαλότητα που κλιμακώθηκε μεταξύ δύο πλευρών. Ήταν οι οπαδοί ενός σωματείου να στοχοποιούν την κοινότητά μας.

Το άλλο κενό είναι η έλλειψη συγκεκριμένων στοιχείων. «Πολύ σοβαρές συνέπειες», «περαιτέρω πειθαρχική δράση» — αυτές είναι υποσχέσεις που θα ονομαστούν αργότερα, όχι δεσμεύσεις τώρα. Αυτό είναι το τρίτο τεκμηριωμένο περιστατικό που αφορά οπαδούς της Preston Lions μέσα σε λίγο περισσότερο από έναν χρόνο, και την τελευταία φορά που ενήργησε η Football Victoria, η κύρωση διατυπώθηκε γύρω από φωτοβολίδες και μη ασφαλή συμπεριφορά — όχι ρατσιστική προσβολή. Θα παρακολουθούμε προσεκτικά αν η ανακοίνωση της επόμενης εβδομάδας θα αντιμετωπίσει πραγματικά αυτό ως αυτό που είναι.

**Τι θέλουμε ακόμα να δούμε**

Το να το αντιμετωπίζεις σοβαρά μπροστά στην κάμερα είναι μια αρχή. Δεν είναι το τέλος της διαδρομής. Μια δήλωση, όσο ευθεία κι αν είναι, δεν είναι το ίδιο με τις συνέπειες. Αυτό το σωματείο έχει χάσει το δικαίωμα σε ομοιόμορφη, αδιαμφισβήτητη στήριξη από πολιτικούς και επιχειρηματικούς φορείς. Αυτή η στήριξη δεν πρέπει να συνεχιστεί σαν να μην συνέβη τίποτα — πρέπει να αποσυρθεί και να παραμείνει αποσυρμένη μέχρι να υπάρξει μακροχρόνια, αποδεδειγμένη ένδειξη ότι έχει πραγματοποιηθεί πραγματική πολιτισμική αλλαγή στην Preston Lions: όχι ένα δελτίο τύπου, όχι ένα μεμονωμένο πειθαρχικό αποτέλεσμα, αλλά μια συνεχή, αποδεδειγμένη μετατόπιση μακριά από μια κουλτούρα οπαδών που έχει παράξει τρία τεκμηριωμένα περιστατικά μέσα σε λίγο περισσότερο από έναν χρόνο, προς ένα σωματείο που στέκεται υπέρ της συνεργασίας μεταξύ κοινοτήτων αντί της εχθρότητας προς μία από αυτές.

Αυτό το πρότυπο ισχύει για τους χορηγούς. Ισχύει για την Football Victoria. Και, με όλο τον σεβασμό, ισχύει και για τους πολιτικούς που εκπροσωπούν την έδρα αυτού του σωματείου. Η συνέχιση της στήριξης προς την Preston Lions χωρίς αυτή την απόδειξη δεν είναι ουδέτερη στάση — είναι επιδοκιμασία όσων έχουν αφεθεί να σαπίζουν εκεί, όποια κι αν είναι η πρόθεση πίσω από αυτό. Δεν πιστεύουμε ότι αυτή είναι η πρόθεση του κ. Lambert. Όμως η πρόθεση δεν είναι αυτό που προστατεύει την κοινότητά μας. Η απόσταση, και η απόδειξη αλλαγής, είναι.

Ευχαριστούμε τον κ. Lambert που μίλησε δημοσίως και που το στήριξε με αναφορά σε πραγματικά νομοθετικά εργαλεία. Ζητάμε τώρα από εκείνον, και από όλους όσους έχουν επικοινωνήσει μαζί μας για αυτό το θέμα, να αντιστοιχίσουν αυτή τη σοβαρότητα με το ένα πράγμα που πραγματικά αλλάζει τη συμπεριφορά: να καταστήσουν τη στήριξη υπό όρους, και να την κρατήσουν αποσυρμένη μέχρι να την κερδίσουν πίσω.
