Leading a dynamic midwifery ward
“There’s no typical day in birth suite; it changes every day with every woman and family that come through.”
Jess Corin is the Midwifery Manager, Birth Suite and Fetal Monitoring Assessment Centre (FMAC) at Eastern Health Box Hill.
Embodying the Eastern Health value of Innovate, Learn and Lead, Jess finds it rewarding to see the development of staff in their roles.
“In the FMAC space we are training up midwives to be able to do scans, which is great for a midwife to be able to give that continuity.” Jess said.
FMAC provides booked appointments for scans, blood pressure checks and the monitoring of babies, helping reduce presentations to the Emergency Department. They also provide Early Pregnancy Assessment Service (EPAS) for women who may be experiencing a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancies.
Very recently a mum gave birth in the waiting room entrance of the Eastern Health Box Hill Emergency Department.
It was a particularly busy night for the birth suite, as there were seven babies born within a ten-hour shift, while the average is six babies per day.
“To have seven babies in a ten-hour shift is a lot, but a joyous time for all of us. And we were grateful that the woman made it into the ED”.
Sharing her wisdom earned throughout the years working in birth suite, Jess encourages people to say ‘yes’ to opportunities that come forward.
“Midwives have a massive role in birth suite and a lot of autonomy in their space”
“Anything that you can learn from your colleagues is important for your own growth.
Taking on everything and all the advice that people can give you will make you a better midwife in the end.”
