Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency

Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency ARPANSA is the Australian Government's primary authority on radiation protection and nuclear safety.

ARPANSA is the independent regulator of Commonwealth entities that use or produce radiation. ARPANSA provides advice and services to the Australian community on radiation protection, nuclear safety, security, and medical exposures to radiation. The agency also undertakes internationally recognised research and promotes both national uniformity and the implementation of international best practice.

From our scientists to the world’s first scientists, we respectfully acknowledge Traditional Owners and First Nations communities and their rich cultures. We recognise, respect and continue to learn from Indigenous sciences, and the deep understanding and observations of land, waters and sky carried and shared by First Nations peoples over thousands of years.

Think sunscreen is just for summer? Think again.

UV levels can still reach 3+ in winter, including this weekend in Perth and across central and northern Australia.

Even mild sunburn increases your melanoma risk, and the damage can last. Make sunscreen part of your routine, even in cooler months.

Often people don’t think about sun protection in winter, but in many parts of Australia UV levels are 3 or above right through the winter months. If

🌏 Did you know World Environment Day has been bringing people together in support of environmental causes since 1973?

Each year on 5 June, millions of people around the world take action to protect our environment, making it the largest global platform for environmental outreach.

At ARPANSA, protecting the environment is at the heart of what we do. Our scientists work behind the scenes to understand and minimise the impacts of radiation on people and the planet.

Here’s just some of the work we do:

🌿 Managing Australia's Comprehensive Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) radiation monitoring networks to ensure no nuclear test goes undetected
🌿Evaluating research to assess potential environmental impacts from radio waves used in wireless communication
🌿 Verifying environmental monitoring for major regulated facilities
🌿Assisting in measurement studies of historical nuclear test sites to ensure safe access for local communities
🌿Supporting international research into environmental impacts of radiation from natural and artificial sources
🌿Measuring ultraviolet radiation from the sun to inform sun protection practices.

This World Environment Day, let’s all take a moment to reflect on how we can help protect the world around us, today and for future generations.

Ready to use your science skills to make a real impact?
We’re recruiting a Scientific Support Officer to support nationally significant work in radiation protection and emergency preparedness at ARPANSA.

In this role, you will contribute to updating the Australian Clinical Guidelines for Radiological Emergencies, supporting clinicians, response agencies and public health officials to better manage radiation-related incidents.

You will also contribute to:

☑️ Reviews of biodosimetry capability in Australia and internationally
☑️ Improvements to ARPANSA’s meter hire service for the public
☑️ Risk assessments and dose calculations to understand health impacts
☑️ Technical reports and guidance that translate complex science into clear advice

This is an exciting opportunity to work with multidisciplinary teams and engage with stakeholders across Australia, delivering work that protects people and the environment.

You’ll be based in Melbourne, working with expert teams in a collaborative and science-led environment.

At ARPANSA, we are committed to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. Applications close 9 June 2026.

Did you know that ARPANSA has a service that helps ensure radiation therapy is delivered accurately and consistently for radiotherapy patients?

Through our Australian Clinical Dosimetry Service (ACDS), we deliver a world-class independent auditing program that supports the safe and accurate delivery of therapy across Australia and New Zealand.

Operating since 2011, the service provides comprehensive audits across a wide range of clinical practices and is recognised nationally and internationally for its expertise in quality assurance.

Where does the 'dimpled' koala sit on the family tree?

We love this recent yarn by ABC News showing how uranium–thorium dating was used to work out the age of a now extinct so called 'dimpled' Koala that once called the eucalypt forests of Western Australian home.

What happens when a mysterious blue glowing powder turns out to be radioactive? 😳

Netflix’s 'Radioactive Emergency' is inspired by a real disaster in Brazil in 1987. ARPANSA’s expert in radiation and emergency preparedness says it’s a sobering reminder of why radioactive source security matters.

➡️ Read his 5-star review and an ANSTO health physicist review at

“Radioactive Emergency” is a Netflix dramatisation of one of the world’s worst radiological incidents: the 1987 Goiânia accident in Brazil. "Having spent my career working for the Commonwealth radiation regulator, the series aptly portrays why robust regulation and compliance for radioactive ...

Do you check the label to see how much UV protection your sunglasses provide?

We have an ultraviolet radiation laboratory (pictured) that tests sunglasses, as well as clothes, shade fabrics plus other materials to determine a protection factor rating so that customers can be confident of their sun protective properties.

Businesses and individuals can engage this service. You can tell if a company has had their product independently certified and tested by seeing if there is an ARPANSA label on their product or on promotional material.
