Happy Fabian Mother’s Day. Remembering Beatrice Webb.

Credit Wikipedia: Martha Beatrice Webb, (née Potter; 22 January 1858 – 30 April 1943) was an English sociologist, economist, feminist and social reformer. She was among the founders of the London School of Economics and played a crucial role in forming the Fabian Society. Additionally, she authored several popular books, with her most notable being The Co-operative Movement in Great Britain and Industrial Democracy, co-authored with her husband Sidney Webb. She coined the term "collective bargaining" as a way to discuss the negotiation process between an employer and a labor union. As a feminist and social reformer, she criticised the exclusion of women from various occupations as well as campaigning for the unionisation of female workers, pushing for legislation that allowed for better hours and conditions.

Pope Leo XIV has spoken out about the need to seek peace in the world and not war. President Trump has essentially told him to mind his own business and to stick to issues of religious teaching and belief. But Pope Leo is indeed sticking to his essential business: that of ethical and moral leadership.

The Catholic Church has very explicit teachings about war, which underlie much international law on the subject and can provide a moral compass for our times.

In A Just War. Pope Leo and Trump, long term Fabian and former Jesuit priest Peter Norden gives us a fascinating insight into this topic.

The Nature Positive Plan, launched in 2022, sets out the government’s commitment to reform Australia’s environmental laws. These reforms are wide-reaching and ambitious. When will we see measurable improvements? Will they be enough to protect and restore our unique environment? What are the challenges?

Join us to hear our speaker Kelly O’Shanassy, former Chair of ACF and incoming Chair of Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife, as she clarifies the planning process and the intended impact of these forward-looking plans.

As land use changes and climate conditions fluctuate, what can Australia do to protect its unique environment and guide future developments?

Watch “Australia in a Changing World”, with Warwick Powell, now on Australian Fabians’ YouTube.

Warwick is an Adjunct Professor at Queensland University of Technology and is an internationally sought after speaker on geopolitics. He works “at the intersection of China, digital technologies, supply chains, financial flows and global political economy & governance.”

We asked Warwick to help us understand what is happening in the world today, where it is all going, how Australia fits in, and what choices we have.

Warwick first laid out for us the frameworks that he uses to understand global politics. This was followed by a lively Q&A session, where we ranged across issues from the future of International Law and international policy development to the conflicts in Venezuela, Ukraine and Iran - and the role that Australia has played - to Australia’s current and potential place within our region … Finishing with Warwick’s advice to Donald Trump.

An erratic US president, Carney's speech at Davos and the fading of the “rules based international order”. What does it all mean? What should Australia do? W...
