During your visit to the Shrine, be sure to visit the Balcony! Offering a moment to pause and reflect while enjoying sweeping views across Melbourne.

From the Balcony, you can look out across the 13-hectare Shrine Reserve, with over 280 memorials, before taking in panoramic views of Melbourne.

It’s a chance to see the city from a different perspective while taking a moment to reflect on the stories remembered here.

Today is Malaya and Borneo Veterans' Day.

The Malayan Emergency took place between 1948 and 1960. The Federation of Malaya declared the Malayan Emergency on 16 June 1948 in response to rising violence from the Malayan Communist Party (MCP). Australians from all branches of the Armed Forces responded over a 13-year period. More than 7,000 Australians served, and thirty-nine Australians were killed.

The Indonesian confrontation began from attempts to destabilise and destroy the new federation of Malaysia, and took place between 1962 and 1966. A peace treaty was signed in Bangkok on 11 August 1966, ending the conflict. At the beginning of the confrontation, Australia did not respond to requests for troops; however, in January 1965 Australians were deployed to Borneo, with twenty-three Australians losing their lives in the conflict.

Today we are commemorating the service and sacrifice of those who served during the Malayan Emergency and the Indonesian Confrontation with a wreath-laying service.

At the heart of our latest exhibition, 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤, are 260 embroidered handkerchiefs. Pictured here is just a glimpse of the works on display.

Each handkerchief was created by one of 45 women living in Afghanistan—one for every week since the Taliban regime seized control of the country in August 2021.

Created by emerging artists Mursal Azizi and Kat Rae, the exhibition brings together traditional artistry and contemporary artistic practice.

11 October marks 25 years since the Australian Defence Force deployed troops to Afghanistan, joining the international coalition against terrorism.

Hosted by Shrine of Remembrance Chair, Major General (Retd) Andrew Bottrell AO, CSC & Bar, DSM, with reflections from Shrine Governors Squadron Leader Rebekah (Bek) Herron (Retd), Christopher May OAM and Captain Paul Scott, RAN, share in the stories of how their military service continues to shape their lives, their understanding of remembrance, and their contribution to the Shrine today.

Prior to this discussion, gather on the Shrine Forecourt at 4.45pm for a moving Last Post Service marking the 25th anniversary of the commencement of Operation Slipper.

Join us this afternoon for our Last Post Service—a weekly tradition honouring wartime service and sacrifice.

Today, we are commemorating the establishment of the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) on 13 August 1941. The AWAS played a vital role in Australia's war effort, with over 24,000 women serving in non-medical roles. Their contributions freed men for combat duty and helped secure victory. We honour the dedication and service of these remarkable Australian women.

The Last Post Service is a family-friendly event featuring stirring bugle calls, wreath-laying, and the lowering of flags.

Each week we commemorate a unique chapter in Australia’s military history, offering you a meaningful way to reflect and connect.
