Olinda Rural Fire Brigade

Olinda Rural Fire Brigade 100% Volunteer Fire Brigade servicing the Olinda and parts of Mt Dandenong areas 24/7. The Olinda Rural Fire Brigade was formed in 1927. Everyone is welcome.

All of our members are 100% volunteers and we all come from many and varied backgrounds, all offering different skills, experiences and qualities. Currently we have 65 volunteer members. Of those 65 members we have operational (fire fighters) , recruits in training, non operational (brigade support team) and junior members. We welcome new members throughout the year. The brigade has 3 tankers avai

lable for deployment to any bush fire, car accident, or structural fire in our designated area. The Dandenong Ranges Group FOV (Forward Operational Vehicle) and the FCV (Forward Command Vehicle) are also housed at the Olinda Fire Station. These vehicles are owned by the 15 Dandenong Ranges Group of Fire Brigades. Thorough out the year we attend an average of around 60 emergency incidents per year. These incidents include grass and scrub fires, house or structural fires, motor vehicle accidents, and washaways, power line fires, gas leaks as well as supporting our neighbouring brigades of Kalorama/Mount Dandenong and Sassafras/Ferny Creek. Our members have varied experience ranging from 50 years to only a few months. We train every Wednesday evening and Sunday mornings. Our brigade places community safety and the protection of lives as our utmost important goal. We have a Community Education & Engagement Plan and our Brigade has a very strong focus on the safety and education of our residents and local businesses. We place strong focus on engaging with our community to ensure they are the best prepared and most educated they can be to help build a resilient community. We hold annual fire safety information activities and events such as community meetings, bush fire planning workshops, help for businesses as well as offering Property Advice Visits to individual residents. Our Brigade Newsletter “Sit Rep” is posted to all residents and businesses in our Brigade area each year. Details are advertised through our page, newsletter , our brigade noticeboard and website and local newspaper editorials. We deliver fire safety information kits to new residents several times a year
These events aim to provide access to fire preparedness information and expertise to our residents and businesses. We hope to provide opportunities to talk with local CFA volunteers and enable us to engage with our locals to help build a resilient, well prepared community. You might be interested in becoming an operational fire fighter and this entails a “recruits” training course before you are ready to get on a truck. Fire fighters come from all walks of life and there are no barriers to anyone becoming one. We have females, males, young and old. Some of our members work full time, part time, study, stay at home with children or are retired. There are no barriers to becoming a member, it’s FREE and you contribute as much time as you have. The only requirement we have is that you put your hand up to help us out. You may not want to be a fire fighter but may want to help out in a non operational support way. You can join our Brigade Support Team and become part of your local 100% volunteer fire brigade in many other ways. We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you. Support your local community by giving us a call today on 0407 455 914.

Before winter settles in, take a moment to check one of the most important safety devices in your home, your smoke alarms.

🔥 Monday 1st June is Smoke Alarm Action Day 🔥

Smoke alarms provide an early warning when every second matters. Modern homes can fill with smoke incredibly quickly during a fire, making working smoke alarms essential for protecting you and your family.

Now is the perfect time to:

✅ Test all smoke alarms in your home
✅ Check smoke alarms are installed in bedrooms, hallways and living areas
✅ Replace batteries if required
✅ Replace smoke alarms that are more than 10 years old
✅ Review and practise your home fire escape plan

Many serious house fires start in sleeping areas, and if a fire occurs overnight, a working smoke alarm can provide the critical time needed to escape safely.

As the colder weather arrives, remember to:
🔥 Keep heaters at least one metre away from furniture, bedding and curtains
🕯️ Never leave candles unattended
🍳 Stay in the kitchen while cooking

A few minutes spent checking your smoke alarms today could make all the difference tomorrow.

🚒 From all of us at Phillip Island CFA, stay safe this winter and make sure your smoke alarms are ready when you need them most.

Just a reminder that the Yarra Ranges local law covering bushland areas (including all of Sassafras, Ferny Creek and surrounds) prohibits burning off in June and July. We really don’t appreciate becoming umpires in neighbourhood disputes … if you have an issue, please contact Council. Save 000 for emergencies.

In December 1998, five CFA (Country Fire Authority) firefighters lost their lives fighting a bushfire in Linton, 150km west of Melbourne.

This tragic event rocked the firefighting community. To recognise the sacrifice of those firefighters, and the work of firefighters around the world, International Firefighters' Day was established in 1999.

The date, 4 May, was chosen to coincide with St Florian's Day - the patron saint of firefighters.

Day and night - in the heat, cold or rain - firefighters answer the call to assist our communities every day of the year.

Today, we're thinking about what they give up to protect lives and property.

Thank you CFA (Country Fire Authority), Forest Fire Management Victoria and Fire Rescue Victoria for everything you do to help keep Victorians safe ❤️💙

Want to help out our firefighters after one of Victoria’s busiest bushfire seasons on record? 🔥

This time of year, our crews regularly respond to private burn-offs that either become out of control or haven’t been registered with authorities. It means volunteers are needlessly called out when they should be spending more time with their families.

So, if you’re planning a burn-off in the next few days while the rain stays away, do our firies a favour:

✅ The quickest and easiest way to register your burn-off is online at firepermits.vic.gov.au or by calling 1800 668 511 if you plan to burn in the next 2 hours.

❌ Never leave your burn unattended until it’s fully extinguished.

🌦️ Check fire restrictions and weather conditions.

☎️ Be a good neighbour and let them know there could be smoke nearby.

Lest we forget. ❤️💙A perfect day to show our respect for those who fought for the freedom we enjoy today. ❤️💙
