The social media ban for under-16s is now in effect. Here’s how Victorian schools can support this transition.

âś… Inform parents and carers
Use the eSafety parent guides and Safe Socials parent/carer fact sheets to explain the new age restrictions and support families to navigate changes:

✅ Support students’ understanding and wellbeing
Distribute eSafety’s youth guides and Safe Socials student fact sheets in pastoral care, wellbeing or health classes to help students understand what the changes mean:

âś… Build staff capability
Use eSafety’s educator guidance to brief staff on what the new restrictions mean and how to support students:

✅ Review and strengthen your school’s digital-use policies
Refer to the Victorian Digital Technologies – Responsible Use Policy when updating acceptable-use agreements and outlining when social media can or cannot be used for learning:

âś… Embed a whole-school approach to online safety (aligns with the Achievement Program Safe Environments Health Priority Area)
Use eSmart Schools and the eSafety Toolkit for Schools to support whole-school online safety culture and incident response processes:

👏 Lowanna College is making health and wellbeing a priority!

Through the Achievement Program, they’ve introduced mental health awareness days, student-led initiatives, staff and student mental health first aid training and a healthier canteen menu with Vic Kids Eat Well.

Paul Fry, the school’s wellbeing leader said the Achievement Program celebrated the school’s existing health and wellbeing commitments and builds on its strengths.

“The experience has been like going through a health and wellbeing checklist and making sure we've got all areas covered. This approach acknowledges and celebrates what we've already achieved from a health and wellbeing standpoint and provides opportunities to progress through other areas,” he said.

A big thank you to Emily Koppen and Lucy Sevenson from Latrobe Community Health Service for supporting Lowanna College on this journey!
