The yellow brick road leads....to Kaniva

Before "The Wizard of Oz" became a cinematic classic, its promotional picture book was illustrated by Percy Leason, an Australian artist from Kaniva in Western Victoria.

Leason moved to the US and was struggling to support his family in Depression-era New York. the family was down to "two potatoes" when he received an offer from a publisher in 1939: Would he like to illustrate a children’s picture book to promote an upcoming film about a girl called Dorothy from Kansas?

Now, Leason’s hometown is celebrating his legacy with a heritage trail featuring artwork inspired by his famous cartoons and illustrations, recognising a remarkable local artist whose influence reached around the world.

The town of Kaniva, and even the smaller settlement of Lillimur, in far-western Victoria, played an important role in the astonishing success of the legendary Hollywood movie, The Wizard of Oz.

VicScreen and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival have joined forces to bring Victoria's next wave of comedy talent from stage to screen.

Victorian comedy writers and stand-ups to pitch new narrative comedy series concepts, with successful applicants invited to develop their idea into a half-hour pilot script with the support of leading international comedy mentorship.

This unique space features five large-scale glass vitrines along the Southbank walkway between Sturt and Moore Streets, providing a unique opportunity to present sculptural, two and three-dimensional works that are accessible to audiences 24/7.

Previous exhibiting artists include The Huxleys, Yuchen Xin, Tatjana Este, Sean Meilak, Miranda Smith, University of Melbourne alumni and more.

Vale Bill Armstrong

As a recording engineer, studio owner, record label operator, and radio entrepreneur, his contributions spanned over seven decades, shaping Australia's music industry.

From pioneering home recording techniques to establishing Armstrong Studios Bill's influence was profound.

In recent years Bill donated recordings from his Bilarm Music and Swaggie Records catalogues to the Australian Road Crew Association, with all money from the re-issues used to help roadies and crew members in crisis.

The Victorian Government is investing in the musical places and beloved spaces where live music happens.

10,000 Gigs: The Victorian Gig Fund​ is NOW OPEN supporting Victorian venues to stage more paid performances by local artists.

Eligible venues can apply for up to $11,000 to present up to 20 paid performances by Victorian artists.

Applications close 2pm Wednesday 2 September.

Small Regional Presenters is a funding program that supports regional communities to program and present shows in their area. It also supports skills development and capacity building by encouraging presenters to develop long term plans and audience development strategies.
