TW: Discussion of sexual assault, r**e and gendered based violence.
Sexual violence is a crisis, and we should be doing more.
In Australia, more than 1 in 5 women have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15, yet the majority of survivors never report their most recent incident to police.
These numbers tell us something important, that sexual violence is not an isolated incident or an unfortunate exception. It is deeply embedded in our communities and institutions.
That is why the case of Jane Doe at Cornell matters.
The case is a confronting example of what happens when survivors are failed by institutions.
After reporting that she was r**ed in 2024, Jane Doe has continued to fight for accountability, with the criminal investigation now reopened.
A survivor should not have to fight an institution, a legal system, public scrutiny and threats simply to be heard.
Jane Doe deserves more. Every survivor deserves more.
Universities have a responsibility to create environments where students are safe from sexual violence, where reporting is accessible, where survivors are supported, and where allegations are taken seriously and investigated properly.
We cannot be satisfied with statements after the fact.
We need prevention.
We need education.
We need accountability.
And we need to challenge the misogyny and r**e culture that enables sexual violence in the first place.
We stand with survivors.
We demand accountability.
We should be doing more.
