The instinct to lend a hand can be expressed in so many different ways.

At the Order of Australia investiture ceremonies at Government House this week, it was clear that public recognition that is often not sought, but always richly deserved.

Over three days many Victorians were recognised for their service and contributions – the value of which will continue to be felt for years to come.

During the week, attendance at the naarmarchitecturefoundation launch was also a chance to reflect on how the architecture of our time will shape the city that future generations inherit.

Meanwhile, groups from U3A Yarra Valley, Rural Youth Ambassadors and members of the public were all welcomed on tours of the State Apartments and Kitchen Garden.

Jason Heffernan AFSM has served as the Chief Officer of the CFA (Country Fire Authority) since 2020.

During that time, he has led the organisation through intense fire seasons as well as through a period of organisational transformation.

In a few months’ time, he will be stepping down from his role as CFA Chief Officer.

But before then, he was awarded an Australian Fire Service Medal in recognition of his distinguished service – presented to him this week at Government House.

For more than two decades, Katrina Antony ESM has volunteered for Life Saving Victoria.

Those years represent thousands of patrol hours on Victorian beaches, keeping swimmers safe.

Beyond the beach, she has done much to improve the efficiency and accessibility of lifesaving training in her role as Director of Training and Assessment.

An Emergency Services Medal, presented to her this week at Government House, is a fitting recognition for those efforts.

Victoria is a world leader in medical research, and a pioneer in the development of the cochlear implant.

Those successes, and the many lives they have improved, are thanks to the work of people like Emeritus Professor Richard Dowell AO.

Just over 40 years ago, he established of the first cochlear implant clinic at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.

This week, in recognition of his distinguished service to audiology, he was invested as an Officer of the Order of Australia at Government House.

Nearly half of Victorians have a parent born overseas or were born overseas themselves.

Among them are many thousands of young people from multicultural backgrounds.

In 1988 the Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) became the first organisation in Australia to work exclusively with migrant and refugee young people.

A visit to the centre’s offices was a chance hear about their programs to connect and empower these communities, and to meet some of the team behind the important work of this patronage organisation.

The Border Music Camp has been bringing musicians together in the regions for more than 50 years.

Margaret Gleeson OAM has been volunteering at the camp as an organiser for 25 of them.

Combined with several other roles, she has done much to improve access to the arts for rural communities.

After meeting at a civic reception in Wodonga earlier this month, this week was a chance to reconnect as she came to Government House for her investiture.
