As part of National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the people who help make community sport welcoming, inclusive and connected for everyone, with our final volunteer spotlight shining on Nandy from Walking Football 4 Health Victoria

Since joining the club in 2025, Nandy has helped create spaces where people of all ages and abilities can stay active, connect with others and enjoy the game at their own pace.

As a volunteer, Nandy supports day to day activities across different locations, helps demonstrate walking football at community expos, manages enquiries and occasionally leads Docklands sessions.

“I love that walking football is so inclusive. It’s a game anyone can play at their own pace.”

After moving to Australia, being part of the club helped Nandy build community, connection and a real sense of purpose.

Fun fact: Nandy speaks four languages and is currently learning a fifth!

Thank you to volunteers like Nandy who help make community sport safe, welcoming and inclusive for all.

Meet Kayla from Melbourne University Basketball Club.

Kayla first joined MUBC in 2018 and has been part of the club committee since 2022. As Vice President and a player in the club’s domestic basketball programme, she is passionate about creating inclusive sporting environments that encourage participation for people of all ages.

Last year, Kayla led the launch of the MUBC Spirit Award, recognising the people who make the biggest positive social contribution at basketball tournaments and help strengthen the club’s supportive culture.

“I love that MUBC is a place where I can find a community of people who all share a passion for basketball.”

Through the club, Kayla has found lifelong friendships, a strong sense of community and even met her partner James at a basketball tournament in 2020. 💫

Thank you to volunteers like Kayla who help make community sport safe, welcoming and inclusive for all.

Meet Belen. ⚽💙

Community sport is powered by passionate people like Belen.

After moving to Australia from Argentina, Belen joined Melbourne Social Soccer Inc as a player and found more than just a place to play. She found community, connection and belonging.

Now, alongside helping organise events, Belen manages the club’s social media channels, helping create a welcoming and inclusive environment where people from all backgrounds can get involved, stay active and meet new people through sport.

“I love having a place to play with friends, meet new people from different backgrounds and keep improving my skills.”

In 2025, Belen completed the City of Melbourne sponsored Boardroom School program, building leadership skills and confidence to support the future of community sport.

Volunteers help make community sport safe, inclusive and welcoming for everyone and Belen is a big part of that.
