Remember Songs Inside? We have some wonderful news to share.

If you joined us for our Songs Inside movie night last year, you’ll remember the incredible story of women in Adelaide Women’s Prison finding connection, confidence and a voice through songwriting.

Now you can hear the music in full. ❤️

The live performance featured in the film has been released as an album:
Songs Inside presents – Live from the Adelaide Women’s Prison
by The Songbirds, Nancy Bates & the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

Recorded inside Adelaide Women’s Prison in 2023, the historic performance was the largest concert ever staged inside an Australian prison.

Even better, 100% of the album proceeds will be shared between the songwriters and performers, most of whom are no longer incarcerated. If you purchase through Bandcamp, a greater percentage of the income goes towards the participants.

🎧 Search for the album on your favourite streaming service:

If Songs Inside stayed with you after our movie night, this is a beautiful opportunity to hear the full performance — and support the women who created it.

This week, we were pleased to welcome Luba Grigorovitch MP, Victoria’s Minister for Youth and Minister for Carers and Volunteers, to WAM’s Art of Connection exhibition at Sunshine Library.

Luba’s portfolios are closely connected to the work we do at WAM — supporting young people, strengthening the contribution of volunteers and walking alongside women and non-binary people whose lives have been impacted by the justice system.

The visit also came at an important time for the Sunshine community, where conversations about community safety, prevention and creating communities where people feel connected and supported are particularly important.

We were joined by Brimbank Councillor Victoria Borg, WAM’s Board Chair Susan Short and members of our team, as well as volunteer mentors and lived experience advocates who shared what being part of WAM has meant to them.

These conversations matter. Building safer communities isn't only about what happens after harm occurs — it is also about investing in connection, opportunity, early intervention and the people who can walk alongside someone before their circumstances escalate.

That is at the heart of WAM’s work, and why Art of Connection is so much more than an exhibition.

Thank you to everyone who came along, shared their experiences and helped create space for a thoughtful conversation about connection and community.

And thank you to Sunshine Library for hosting us. 💜

WAM staff attended the 'No Air in Prison Bill' rally organised by the Human Rights Law Centre and supported by organisations advocating for people in prisons including Fitzroy Legal Service, Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, Flat Out, Voices for Change, Jesuit Social Services, First People's Assembly of Victoria.

The rally was organised to protest Victoria's Corrections Amendment Bill, which will stop people in prison having a right to a minimum of one hour of fresh air each day. Speakers included people with lived experience who had been subject to periods without access to fresh air as a result of lockdowns, covid or being placed in solitary confinement, and all spoke to the significant harm this cause to their mental and physical health. Indigenous advocates spoke to how this Bill directly goes against the intention of Treaty.

The Bill passed the Victorian Upper House last week, despite being in contradiction to the Victorian Charter of Human Rights. The No Air in Prison Bill strips away the right of people in prison to have at least one hour each day in the open air by qualifying that it will be subject to ill-defined ‘operational considerations’. It also denies compensation to those already unlawfully deprived of fresh air.

Being in prison is punishment enough, the fundamental right of access to fresh air and daylight should not be denied, as this will simply compound the harm and can actively work against rehabilitation.

WAM believes a justice system should uphold human rights, dignity and opportunities for positive change. WAM stands by lived experiences advocates and allies who are working to challenge this significantly unjust bill.

At WAM our Board Members go above and beyond! Deputy Chair Emily is putting in the work with her training for the Sydney Marathon🏃‍♀️ and we are keen to support her along the way.
Under the tagline 'Marathon for Mentors', Emily will be running the Sydney Marathon to raise funds for Women and Mentoring. 🔗https://loom.ly/OeG3apo She aims to raise over $100 for every km run...a whopping 42km that's $4200 to make a difference in women's lives.
👏 So far she has raised just over $1800. With about 2 weeks left until the Sydney Marathon, there's still time to help Emily to hit her target of $4200.

“Running, just like any other challenge in life, is made easier when someone is by your side. That's what Women and Mentoring - WAM Limited provides.” says Emily
Any support would be incredibly helpful. Please also share this link to the CrowdRaiser page with your friends and family. The more people who can help the bigger the impact!

STOP SUFFOCATING HUMAN RIGHTS

Wednesday 12 August | 12:45pm
Parliament Steps, Melbourne

A rally will be held on the steps of Victorian Parliament in response to the Corrections Amendment Bill 2026, also referred to by campaigners as the “No Air in Prison Bill.”

The Bill proposes changes relating to access to fresh air for people in prison, including removing the existing entitlement to one hour of fresh air each day. It would also permanently exclude the operation of the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities from these provisions and retrospectively remove the right to compensation.

Campaigners and community organisations have raised concerns about the human rights implications of these proposed changes, including the impact on people in custody and the role of the Charter in protecting human rights.

The rally will take place from 12:45pm on Wednesday 12 August on the Parliament Steps.

Everyone deserves to see the sky and breathe fresh air.
