NEW GUIDE: How to Access Home Care Funding

Support at Home is now the main government-funded program for older Australians who need help at home - but depending on your situation, it may not be the only funding pathway available.

Now, there's extra funding available for things like:

• Assistive technology, such as mobility aids, shower chairs or other equipment
• Home modifications, such as grab rails, ramps or safer bathroom access
• Short-term restorative care after a fall, illness or hospital stay
• End of life support at home

We’ve created a new guide to help explain what these funding pathways are, who they’re for, and how to access them.
Inside, we walk through:

• What funding is available
• What services and supports it can cover
• Who may be eligible
• How the process works
• What to ask your provider or assessor

Click below to download your copy, or give one of our friendly home care experts a call and we'd be happy to chat about it with you.

For many people and families, conversations about palliative and end-of-life care can feel difficult to start.

But talking earlier can help make sure a person’s wishes are understood before decisions become urgent.

This week is National Palliative Care Week, with the focus on “Getting to the heart of it: Big Questions. Real Answers.”

For older Australians receiving care at home, this can include questions like:
❓What matters most to me as my needs change?
❓Where would I feel most comfortable being cared for?
❓Who do I want involved in decisions about my care?
❓What support would help my family or carers feel less alone?

This week is a reminder that these conversations do not need to happen all at once. But starting early can make a meaningful difference.

If you’re wondering how to start a conversation about palliative care, Palliative Care Australia has put together a helpful video.

Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXa7shZX_6k&t=9s

For our latest Long Service Legend, we want to shout out someone who doesn’t just work at Sai, but has helped build it from the ground up - Christine, our intake and relationship specialist!

Christine first joined Sai as a Care Manager when the Home Care Package team were just getting started.

“It was pretty much three other people and me,” she recalls. “We all had to wear a lot of different hats, work massive hours, and build Sai into a quality home care provider.”

Christine’s journey into aged care started in nursing, where she quickly realised her passion was working with older people. “I always gravitated towards them, I wanted to make sure they were okay.”

After time in residential care and retirement living, she discovered home care—and everything clicked. “As soon as I saw a way to help people stay at home, that’s exactly where I wanted to be.”

Now, as an Intake & Relationship Specialist, Christine gets to help people make sense of the home care system.

“I’m the first person who gets to give them that lightbulb moment. The information we give people can be life-changing.”

She thrives in the fast pace and challenge of the role, but what matters most is the impact.

“It’s that feeling of stepping into someone’s life and changing it. It can be challenging for sure, but if we’re not here doing it—who is?”

Her advice for anyone starting out in aged care is simple.

“You have to be here for the right reason. You need to genuinely want to help people and make their life better. If that’s your mission, the rest will fall into place.”

Fun fact, Christine has travelled to Bali more than 20 times… and once played World of Warcraft for 30 hours straight. 🎮✈️

Christine, thank you for pouring your heart and soul into making Sai what it is today. You’ve made such an impact on so many lives, and we love you for it!

For our latest Long Service Legend, we want to give a HUGE shout-out to Claire, who’s been with us since 2021!

Claire joined us as a temp admin and quickly found herself drawn into the world of NDIS. When a full-time position opened up, she took the leap — and three years later, she’s now one of our valued NDIS Relationship Partners.

“I kind of fell into NDIS,” Claire laughs. “I had a lot of support from the rostering team — I got thrown in at the deep end, but I really enjoyed the challenge.”

Before working with NDIS participants, Claire helped her husband run the family construction business, giving her the grit, communication skills and resilience she brings to her role today.

“I put in a lot of work to communicate and listen to people. I found that building a rapport with clients was so important, as well as having patience and empathy…”

“Well, I had plenty of patience — I put up with my husband for a long time!”

One experience really stands out for Claire.

“We had a client who had a really rough period and was suffering with their mental health — it was my first real crisis. We helped him move through it to a much better place. He had a lizard at home, and we went in every day to check on it, which made him feel so looked after and allowed him to focus on feeling better.”

When she’s not working, you’ll find Claire playing golf, reading, or spending time with her horses. “I used to do eventing — it’s so calming to be out riding.”

And her advice for anyone new to care?

“Listen to your participants, lean on your team, and learn from the people around you.”

We’re so proud to have Claire as part of the Sai team — show her some love in the comments!

We wanted to share some lovely photos of our 24-hour client, Stephen, who’s now living in Melbourne’s South East with our full 24/7 support.

When Stephen first came home from hospital, he was unable to walk and needed significant help with his daily tasks.

With ongoing care, encouragement, and support from our team, he’s now thriving — independently engaging in his routines, rebuilding his confidence, and making incredible progress every day. 👏

These photos capture just how far he’s come, and it’s been so rewarding for everyone involved to see his journey unfold. 🥰

There are over 88,000 people waiting for a Home Care Package and struggling for support. We want to help, which is why we're introducing our Free Care Program!

As part of the Program, anyone who lives in one of our service areas and has been on the waitlist for 6+ months can get 2 hours of free care a fortnight, to help with:

✅Laundry
✅Cooking
✅Light cleaning
✅Companionship
✅Shopping

We’ve seen how stressful the waitlist can be on families in our community. This is our way of giving back and making life a bit easier while you wait for your package to start.

There's no obligation to sign up with Sai once your package comes through, and you don't need to contribute anything while receiving care.
