Last week, we were invited to deliver an Environmental Futures Incursion as part of the Australian International Academy of Education’s Environment Day event. 🌱

In the session, we explored:

🌿 Biodiversity and ecosystem interdependence
🌏 Habitat loss, extinction and environmental change
👕 How food, fast fashion, plastics and technology impact biodiversity and sustainability
🤖 Emerging environmental considerations surrounding technology and AI use
♻️ Sustainable thinking and personal action

The students also put on a range of stalls to raise money for environmental initiatives, including an environment photo booth.

Thanks to Charles, our intern at Zero Waste Victoria, for joining me — and for dragging me into the photos!

It was a great day of learning, conversation and thinking about how we can all contribute to a more sustainable future.

I had the absolute delight of witnessing Rafael Epstein in action at a public radio broadcast today. ABC Melbourne

Being part of an audience like this was a great experience. A topic raised was that Melbourne Central is building more retail, even though there is so much retail sitting empty. Do you have empty retail near you?

My sustainability head kicked into overdrive – why are we focusing on retail when there is so much need for housing – what a waste of resources.

Raf asked - why can't we turn vacant retail spaces into housing? I don’t have the answer to that, but it’s a more than a good question. It’s a great idea.

Waste in hospitals is something I can’t help but notice every time. And I often feel like there’s not much I can do about it.

I went into surgery expecting waste. And yes, some of it was unavoidable. But I can’t help but question - do I actually need this?

This recent visit surprised me. I saw small positive shifts, but also waste that could be avoided.

In an unexpected moment, I was able to avoid creating waste, which I didn’t expect.

Health comes first. But even healthcare professionals have told me they wish there was less waste too.
