🇮🇹130° Anniversario della Società Dante Alighieri di Melbourne

Ieri abbiamo celebrato un importante traguardo per la SocietĂ  Dante Alighieri di Melbourne.

Generazioni di melburniani hanno trovato nella SocietĂ  Dante Alighieri un luogo dove scoprire, imparare e praticare la lingua italiana, ma anche vivere e apprezzare la ricchezza della cultura italiana in tutte le sue forme.

Un sentito ringraziamento a tutti i membri e volontari della SocietĂ  per il loro impegno, la loro generositĂ  e la loro dedizione!

L'attivita' della Società Dante Alighieri è stata particolarmente preziosa in questi decenni perché promuovere la lingua italiana significa molto più che insegnare grammatica e vocabolario. Significa aprire una porta alla nostra storia, letteratura e arte e creare opportunità per persone di tutte le età e provenienze di entrare in contatto con l'Italia e con il mondo italofono.

We celebrated yesterdat an important achievement for the Dante Alighieri Society in Melbourne. 

Generations of Melburnians have found in the Dante Alighieri Society a place where they could discover, learn, and practise the Italian language, but also experience and appreciate the richness of Italian culture in all its forms.

Many thanks to all the members and volunteers of the Society for their commitment, generosity and dedication!

The work of the Dante Alighieri Society has been particularly valuable during these 13 decades because promoting the Italian language means much more than teaching grammar and vocabulary. It means opening a door to our history, literature, and art, and creating opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to engage with Italy and with the Italian-speaking world.

70° ANNIVERSARIO DELLA TRAGEDIA DI MARCINELLE E 25ª GIORNATA NAZIONALE DEL SACRIFICIO DEL LAVORO ITALIANO NEL MONDO.

In occasione dell’8 agosto si celebra la “Giornata nazionale del sacrificio del lavoro italiano nel mondo”, che coincide con la commemorazione dell’incidente minerario di Marcinelle, in Belgio, ove nel 1956, presso la miniera del Bois du Cazier, persero la vita 262 minatori, tra cui 136 italiani.
Per l’occasione, il Vice Presidente del Consiglio e Ministro degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale, On. Antonio Tajani, ha indirizzato un messaggio ai connazionali all’estero.

Is your child born abroad eligible for Italian citizenship? Here are the two possible pathways.

1. Citizenship by descent (iure sanguinis)

The child is recognised as an Italian citizen by descent if:
• At least one parent held exclusively Italian citizenship at the time of the child's birth, or had resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years before the child's birth
• Alternatively, at least one grandparent held exclusively Italian citizenship at the time of the child's birth

Required documents:
• Parents' valid identification documents
• Birth registration form signed by both parents
• Apostilled and translated birth certificate
• Certificato di Residenza Storico for the relevant parent or grandparent
• Marriage certificate (if applicable and not already registered)

2. Citizenship by "Beneficio di Legge" (transitional measure)

If your child is not eligible for citizenship by descent, they may still obtain citizenship through a declaration signed by both parents within 3 years of birth.

For children already born as of 24 May 2025, the declaration may be submitted until 31 May 2029.

If your child turned 18 on or after 24 May 2025, they must submit the declaration personally.

How to proceed
• Apostilled and translated birth certificate
• Declaration signed by both parents in person at the Consulate
• Parents' valid identification documents

Important
Individuals who obtain citizenship through Beneficio di Legge will not be able to pass it on to their children unless they have lived in Italy for at least 2 consecutive years before the child's birth.

If applying through a grandparent, evidence that they held exclusively Italian citizenship at the time of the child’s birth (e.g. a copy of their visa or citizenship certificate issued after the child’s birth)

You DO NOT NEED TO BOOK an appointment to register your child birth.

We were glad to attend the live recording of "Emperors of Rome", the award-winning podcast hosted by Dr Rhiannon Evans and Matt Smith.

As part of the "ROME: Empire, Power, People" exhibition program, this special live event allowed audiences to experience the Emperors of Rome podcast in real time as it explored the forces that shaped one of history’s most influential empires.

Drawing on themes from the exhibition, the recording has brought fresh perspectives and engaging discussion to the gallery context.

Have you lost your Italian citizenship?

You may be eligible to reacquire it under the temporary provisions introduced by Law
No. 74/2025. Applications are open until 31 December 2027.

You may apply if you:
• lost your Italian citizenship on or before 15 August 1992; and
• were either born in Italy, or born abroad and legally resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years before losing your citizenship.

To apply, you will need:
• a valid passport;
• proof of residence in Victoria or Tasmania;
• a full birth certificate;
• documentation demonstrating your previous Italian citizenship and its subsequent loss;
• an Australian citizenship certificate.

Please note that the reacquisition of Italian citizenship by a parent does not automatically extend to minor children residing abroad, and applications for the reacquisition of citizenship and for an Italian passport are separate procedures requiring separate appointments.

Dal potere agli imperatori, dalle strade alle case: "Rome: Empire, Power, People" porta a Melbourne alcuni dei reperti piĂą affascinanti dell'antichitĂ  romana.

La mostra nasce dalla collaborazione tra , il e il Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze, con il supporto operativo di . Un viaggio unico tra potere, quotidianitĂ  e l'ereditĂ  di una civiltĂ  che ha segnato la storia.

Il progetto è stato realizzato anche grazie al sostegno del Consolato Generale d'Italia a Melbourne e dell'.

La mostra è visitabile fino a fine ottobre.

🇮🇹 La Console Generale Chiara Mauri ha aperto ieri l'evento "Model United Nations", una simulazione dei lavori dell'Assemblea Generale dell'Organizzazione, organizzata dalla United Nations Association of Australia.

L’iniziativa, svoltasi completamente in lingua italiana anche nell'ottica di promuovere il bilinguismo, ha coinvolto giovani studentesse e studenti delle scuole secondarie del Victoria in un dibattito dedicato alla salvaguardia e alla protezione di oceani e mari.

Un sentito ringraziamento agli organizzatori per aver promosso un’importante occasione di confronto, valorizzando il multiculturalismo, la cooperazione internazionale e la lingua italiana in un Paese ricco di diversità culturale come l’Australia.

🇦🇺 Consul General Chiara Mauri opened yesterday the event "Model United Nations", a simulation of the General Assembly works, organised by the United Nations Association of Australia.

The initiative engaged young Australian students from secondary Victorian schools in a debate conducted entirely in Italian, also with the aim of promoting biliguism, focusing on the conservation and protection of the world's oceans and seas.

Our sincere thanks to the United Nations Association of Australia for creating this valuable opportunity for dialogue and for promoting multiculturalism, international cooperation and the Italian language in a country as culturally diverse as Australia.

Here's everything you need to know before booking:

- You must be registered with AIRE. Update your records at least 3 days before your appointment
- Book through the official Prenot@mi portal → prenotami.esteri.it
- Bring your completed application form, a recent passport photo, and valid ID
- An Australian driver licence is NOT accepted as ID, but it is valid as proof of residence
- Newborns must also attend in person
- For minors, both parents must provide consent
