50 Years Ago: Wednesday, 23 June 1976:

Morning: Crews from Ports & Harbours and shipwrights salvaged the historic lantern and dome from the top of the tower.

11:00 AM: The remaining structure was doused in kerosene and deliberately set on fire. The intense blaze destroyed the timber keeper’s quarters and iron framework in roughly 20 minutes

Tuesday, 22 June 1976: The Harbour Master deemed the listing structure far too unstable and dangerous for repair crews to board. The decision was made by Ports & Harbours to destroy the ruin to prevent it from collapsing into the shipping channel.

50 Years Ago: Monday, 21 June 1976: At dawn in thick fog, the 7,000-tonne cargo vessel Melbourne Trader collided with the pile light. The impact snapped the iron bark and steel piles at the waterline, pushing the structure 7 metres sideways and leaving it at a precarious 30-degree lean with lower decks submerged
