Tomorrow morning, the STEER NORTH BIKE RIDE will commence the 4,000km Steer North bike ride across 45 days from Melbourne to Cairns during December and January. If you would like to see the riders head off, meet them at Argyle Square in Carlton at 8:00am.

NIC HAMLEY (2007) has been a played a large role in the organisation of the event. The OCGA Community Support Program is proud to announce sponsorship of 2 days of the ride, as well as an extra donation.

Steer North is a community health promotion organisation, in which they aim to inspire people to live more active and healthy lives and improve community health through cycling.

Their aim is for this to become an annual event in which we visit rural and regional communities, which have some of the highest rates of obesity and non-communicable disease (such as diabetes and heart disease) in Australia, delivering health promotion programs and working with local communities to improve access to facilities in order to live a healthier lifestyle. This will help build the foundations of a nationwide community of cyclists we are trying to inspire.

They are also raising funds to donate to the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, which will be used in research into cures for cancer and patient care.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL INVOLVED!

HELP YOUNG STUDENTS IN ROB RIVER - A message from current year 9 students, Tiana and Laura:

If you are able to help, please email [email protected]

Dear Old Carey Grammarians,
Our names are Tiana and Laura and we are year 9 students at Carey involved in the C-change Program. We are working on a project which will benefit indigenous children and students from Robinson River, a remote indigenous community located in the Northern Territory.

As many of you would know, our school participates in an exchange program with the community and we have developed many close connections with the people in their community.
Due to their financial circumstances, they have limited resources and money and very limited schooling options, with all the children of their community overcrowded into only two classes. Often as the students grow older, they receive indigenous scholarships and are sent off to boarding schools to be able to further their education.
It has come to our attention that amongst other things, they have a lack of toiletries during their transition to boarding school, and this is where we want to help out.

So the reason we are writing to you today is to ask for your assistance in supporting our project of creating 50 Essentials packs which we can give to the indigenous students to take with them to start boarding school. This would mean they have one less thing to worry about at a time which will be full of stress and anxiety. We have previously contacted organizations about providing the following, however, all of them have indicated prior commitments to other charity groups. This is where we need your help. We would love to hear from anyone who has a connection to an organization which may be able to help us source the following items which we would love to make up into packs and donate to the Rob River school kids.
- Deodorant
- Body soap/shower gel
- Hand soap
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Shaving cream
- Razors
- Sanitary products
- Toothbrushes
- Toothpaste
- Hair-ties
- Hair brushes

Your assistance with any of the above items would be immensely appreciated, and if you are able to assist, please contact us so we can organize the pick-up of any items.
Your kind support for this cause will make such a big difference to 50 boys’ and girls’ health and self-esteem.

Valuable Student Volunteers Available

Carey Baptist Grammar School has a long tradition of community service following in the footsteps of William Carey and his commitment to service to others. The benefits of service have been known since the early ages and there is a resurgence in popularity with the benefits being reinforced by a volume of recent psychological research.

In order to explore their own skills and the rewards of service, Year 7 at Carey are asked to engage in 3 hours of community service; Year 8 are asked to engage in 6 hours; and Year 9 are tasked with creating and implementing their own community focussed project aimed at enacting change in the world.

If you are involved with a charitable program or community organisation who would benefit from the dedicated and committed involvement of the students we would love to hear from you. We are always seeking out opportunities to provide the students and scaffold their success and positive experiences in this area.

Please contact Chris Higgins, Coordinator of Community and Religious Education, on [email protected] .
