Akoonah Park Men's Shed

Akoonah Park Men's Shed Akoonah Park Men’s shed is located at Akoonah Park, Berwick (Enter Gate 4 in Cardinia Street). John conceived the idea of a Men’s Shed. Jan 2026

The group currently meets most working mornings; our main meeting is at 10.00am on Thursdays. Akoonah Park Men's Shed was first established at a meeting organised by JOHN BYRON, retired Councillor and active member in the local Berwick Community along with JACK RAE of the Akoonah Park Committee of Management. On Sunday the 29th of April 2012 he called a meeting of likeminded men, and that marked t

he beginning of the Akoonah Park Men’s Shed. John was our first President, many of those 28 who attended the first meeting are still members today, sadly John passed away. Humble beginnings, we started with a broken-down steel shed that needed a lot of TLC. It was leased to us by the Akoonah Park Committee of Management, along with the plot of land on which the Shed stood. In the initial months we received many items of furniture, tools, etc to help us establish the shed. Men volunteered their time and with a lot of effort and hard work the renovations took place and they finished the shed to an acceptable standard. The membership at our shed grew rapidly, and it was not long before it became apparent that we needed more room. Akoonah Park Committee of Management approved the erection on an adjoining shed which now houses our hobby room, metal workshop, and our blacksmiths shop. This was all fitted out by the men, with much of the material generously donated by members and local businesses. By 2016 we had 178 members. The committee at the time became aware of the need for a recreation room, extra toilets. These amenities were needed as some men are not hands on people and more leisure / recreational areas with games facilities were needed. Here again with the approval of the Akoonah Park Management, permission was granted to construct the new extension. Money was raised via grants, the main one being a Federal Government Grant for the basic structure. Both Casey and Cardinia Hotel, approved allocation of funds for toilets, heating and air conditioning. Shed members raised the balance, enabling a new, and quality kitchen to be installed. Many shed members provided the labour and expertise to complete the extension in December 2016. We encourage all men to come and visit our Shed. You are welcome to come along and have a look, talk, and have a cup of coffee. If you decide to join, we have a once off joining fee and an annual membership fee; which is reviewed every year. We are open five days a week from around 9am to about 12pm. Thursday is strictly our social day with a hot meal served at lunch. The Shed is proudly affiliated with the Victorian Men’s Shed Association (VMSA).

AGM 2025-26
AKOONAH PARK MEN’S SHED
A large gathering of Members convened at the Akoonah Park Function Centre for the Annual General Meeting.
They witnessed the changing of the guard; the old committee was dissolved and a new Committee elected. With Maurice Hall retiring, Warwick Armstrong was elected as the new president, and his deputy is Lins Harding.
Graeme Williams continues as treasurer and Doug Hutchinson is the perennial Secretary.
New to the Committee – ordinary members are Peter White and Peter Varley.
Maurice addressed Members regarding the year just past and shared the many achievements of both the Shed as its members.
Graeme presented the annual budget as well as the forward estimates.
At the conclusion members retired to the SHED for a light lunch.

8th of July 2026
20 Wanderers braved the chilly weather and headed to Korumburra. Aim visited the historic Coal Creek Community Park. The mine operated from 1880 to 1958. There they mined black coal for local industry. Miners worked underground in terrible condition, Many got coal dust disease which ruined their lungs. They were paid four pence half penny for every ton they extracted. A good miner could mine two tons in a good day. Explain that one to your grandchildren.

Now Coal Creek Heritage Village, a 15-hectare open-air museum, was established in 1974. Now called Coal Creek Community Park and Museum. A fun place for all the family to visit
especially a Saturdays between 8.00am 12.30 when they incorporate a farmers’ market. You need to check times, visitsouthgippsland.com.au/events

From there we went to the Middle Hotel for a lovely meal, nice ambiance, and good pub food at a very fair price. Recommend the Roast of the day for anyone travelling to Korumburra.

If you have not come on a Wanderers Lunch before tick the next one on your Calendar. Next one to be advertised by email and on our notice board.

John Mc Greal from the John Mac Foundation called into the men’s shed today. John was very appreciative of the shed members who contributed food, blankets, and other items for his winter collection to help the needy and the homeless. Good work John

Our Mens' Shed is proud to partner with BUNTY and FUZZ.

💙 Why Akoonah Park Men’s Shed? 💙

As part of our It’s OK to be Bloomin’ Honest campaign, we wanted to support a local organisation making a real difference in our community.

That’s why we’ve chosen Akoonah Park Men’s Shed as our beneficiary.

Men’s Sheds provide a place for connection, friendship, purpose, learning, and support. They bring people together, encourage conversation, and help reduce the isolation that so many people can experience.

Those values align beautifully with what this campaign is all about.

Sometimes a simple conversation can make all the difference.

Throughout Men’s Health Week, we’ll be donating $10 from every Bloomin’ Honest Bouquet sold to support the wonderful work they do.

You can also support the campaign by:
🌸 Purchasing a Bloomin’ Honest Bouquet
💙 Sponsoring a bouquet for our Tag a Mate Giveaway
🌿 Making a donation through our website

Thank you to everyone who has already supported this campaign.

Together, we’re helping to start conversations that matter.

The Wanderers Lunch
The Wanderers Lunch group did something different this month. Instead of meeting on a Wednesday, we met on Saturday 23 May and it was a hit. We had 21 people attend the Naked Racer museum and cafe.
After checking out all the magnificent machines, we sat down for a most enjoyable breakfast/lunch with excellent company and plenty of good banter.
What started off as a small motorcycle shop back in 1988 known as Antique Motorcycles, it has since become the premier classic & vintage motorcycle dealership over the past 30 years.
With an impressive museum to boot, Naked Racer Moto Co. houses over 250 exotic machines in what is now one of Australia's largest antique motorcycle museum located in the heart of Cheltenham, Victoria.

Thank you to everyone who attended. Nick and I hope you all had a great day.

NICK,DAVID.
