This article was written last month before the Supreme Court Decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was confirmed.

"The Roe v. Wade ruling came at a time of historic societal upheaval, on the back of working class struggle following a leftward shift around the world, and in the US in particular following the civil rights and anti-Vietnam war movements.

It is not only possible through active mass opposition to enact change, but it is in fact the only way change can happen. This is why it’s crucial that working class people of all genders and races come together to fight against the reactionary agenda of the right. Students, community organisations, labour unions and working class people more broadly banding together is necessary to beat back these attacks."

While getting rid of the Morrison government is obviously something to celebrate, it's important to know what to expect from a Labor government. Below we share an article that was written following the 2019 federal election:

"Far from emulating the approach of Sanders or Corbyn, Albanese is actually taking Labor further to the right. Many of the party’s election policies have been dumped, including the very limited program of ending tax dodges for the rich like negative gearing."

Reading Time: 3 minutes After Labor’s disastrous election defeat, Anthony Albanese took over the party leadership from Bill Shorten. Given Albanese is from Labor’s New South Wales ‘left’ faction, some hope that the party will now shift to the left. Unfortunately, this won’t be the case. Al...

"A war and, in general, any rise in national antagonisms and conflicts, represent the most difficult ground for the Left to adopt a position; this is particularly the case for the anti-capitalist/internationalist Left."

Socialist Action is a part of Internationalist Standpoint, and we agree with the position put forward in this article by our cothinker in Greece, Andros Payiatsos.

In light of the explosion and fire that erupted at the Ukranian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia on March 4th, our Greek Cothinker Electra Kleitsa wrote a fantastic article exploring the future of nuclear power.

The article explores the idea of whether nuclear power truly is a green energy solution to the crisis of global warming, exasperated by the war in the Ukraine. It concludes:

‘A genuine, sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to the problem of energy sufficiency, not only for Europe but for the whole planet, is not possible within the framework of the system of profit and greed. Only a society operating on the basis of the needs of the majority and respecting nature, is able to organise an alternative to the multinationals of profit and environmental destruction.’

On February 26th and 27th, a relaunched group of “Fridays for Future” in Romania held its first meeting in Brasov. In this meeting they established an inspiring manifesto that the climate movement and student strikers in Australia should look to emulate.

In it they declare who is truly responsible for the climate crisis and who is responsible for correcting these issues. But recognising that those responsible have no interest in taking responsibility, this Fridays for Future group is calling us all to take action.

Any lasting change to ensure that our planet is livable in the future is going to have to be fought for. We all need to come together and force the changes that we need. If you would like to be a part of the climate change movement, we encourage you to participate in and support the climate strike taking place across Australia tomorrow.

To read the full manifesto, click on the link in the comments. We will also include links to the School Strike for Climate movement and the events they are running this weekend so you can join us in demanding changes to safeguard our future.

In the spirit of International Women's Day on March 8th, One of our co-thinkers from Turkey, Ecehan Balta, wrote a compelling look at the history of women's oppression. In it she examines when in history we first began to see signs of the oppression of women and what may have prompted these changes to society. She also looks at the socialist literature to see what they have to say about the relation of women's oppression to capitalism. She observes that:

'Marxists on the other hand don’t reduce the importance of women and LGBTQI+ oppression to the class issue. They don’t consider gender oppression as of minor importance. Instead they identify the root of the race, s*x and any other oppressions to class relations.'

Class and gender struggles are intertwined and related. In challenging one we are challenging the other. We stand in solidarity with our sisters in calling for an end to the oppression of women.

New article just hit the website!

Author Reza Sepehr analyses the situation that lead the NSW Nurses to go on strike, as well as the global struggles faced by the health industry as a whole.

'For over two years now, the healthcare workers have been tirelessly working throughout the pandemic. But unfortunately, the only reward they have been receiving is the title of “heroes”. On Tuesday, the nurses – with their clenched fists and angry roars – warned the authorities that “kind words are not enough”. They want change.'

We are sharing this letter in the hopes to gain support before we deliver it to Amnesty International. It was put forward by two Iranian Community political organisations in support of Ms Sepideh Gholian, who has been illegally arrested by The Islamic Rebulic of Iran. Here is an excerpt from the letter:

"The undersigned strongly condemn the regime's tricks in eliminating dissidents by not providing medical treatment or the opportunity to be treated by family. We believe that arresting and imprisonment of any individual based on their beliefs and political views are entirely illegal. Ms Gholian is one of those innocent prisoners that now requires international and national support and assistance.
We call for the full support of Amnesty International and all trade unions, progressive parties and individuals of Sepideh Gholian and other prisoners in similar circumstances.
We urge them to request her immediate and unconditional release to access the most suitable treatment as soon as possible."

If you would like your name added to this letter when it is presented to Amnesty International, please either comment below or send us a dm. If you could please share this, especially with any unions or community groups you're a part of, that would be greatly appreciated. There is another petition you could also consider signing, which will also be in the comments.

Thanks for your support!

"At this moment it is important to strengthen the voices, especially on the Left, against war and to keep clear distances both from Russian and Western imperialism; revealing not only the barbarity of Russian capitalism but also the hypocrisy of the West (US, EU, NATO) which only remembers human rights, democracy and international law when they serve its own interests."
