Young Labor Left Victoria

Young Labor Left Victoria We are the youth wing of the Labor Left in Victoria, fighting for a fairer and more equal society.

The Activist is a group of enthusiastic, left wing candidates committed to openly and loudly campaigning, inside and outside of the party for social change. Change happens by knocking on doors and protesting in the streets, not just one or the other. From lobbying at ALP Conferences to leading at Bust the Budget rallies. We are committed to fearlessly standing up for the issues that young people c

are about, from youth unemployment, Uni and TAFE cuts to climate change and the arts, to protecting Medicare and our public education system. Activist wants Victorian Young Labor to be a campaigning body, fighting for the issues that young ALP members care about. Activist will actively pursue party reform for a more inclusive and democratic Victorian Young Labor and National ALP. It has never been more important for young members of the ALP to be heard in the debates about party reform and the issues that affect marginalized Australians. Defending the rights of young workers; a sustainable environment; our universal healthcare system, a humane approach to asylum seekers; a real social safety net for young people; equal pay and equal marriage rights, closing the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians - these are the things that an activist Young Labor organization should fight for. Vote for Activist candidates at the Victorian Young Labor conference on Sunday 21st August.

STATEMENT ON THE BANNING OF ENGINEERED STONE BY UNIONS CONVENOR DYLAN MCKENNA.

YLL welcomes the government's decision to introduce the ban of engineered stone after over 10 years of 10,000 workers dying per year.

This decision comes too late for many who have fallen or developed life long injuries.

This would not have been able to happen without the hard work of the Union
movement, with the advocacy of the B.I.G. (Building Industrial Group) and the CFMEU.

Without unions workers would still be cutting this stone and dying from it indefinitely.

Ballarat was the location of our 2024 Regional Meeting. 🌹

At this meeting we were fortunate to be hosted by the Ballarat Trades Hall who provided us with a free lunch and a history of Ballarat, the trades hall and unionism in the region.

Michaela Settle MP, Juliana Addison MP and Catherine King joined us to talk about their work in Ballarat. We are lucky to have three Labor Left women representing this region in our parliaments.

A special thanks to Juliana for sharing her memories and stories growing up in the party, with a few hilarious name drops and factional tea.

Regional Meetings are unique to our other meetings. We have the opportunity to meet with MPs and union members from that area and find out about their community and issues, as well as discuss our own agenda and events.

Regional Meetings are often a days long event with sight seeing and other activities included creating an experience for YLL members and illustrating a genuine connection to the area and Victoria.

Well done to our Regional and Rural Convenor Blayke Innes Naoum on a fantastic day🌹

At last month’s Victorian Labor State Conference, YLL put forward the biggest Victorian Young Labor rules change that has taken place since VYL was formally adopted into the Victorian Labor rules platform.

VYL Senior Vice President and YLL member Elijah Buckland introduced the VYL People of Colour Caucus and Co-Convenors rule change - a caucus and leadership team that will primarily help young people of colour tackle and overcome the challenges that they face in politics.

This is the first people of colour caucus to have ever been established within Australian Young Labor - and YLL will always lead the way on history making changes within VYL. 🌹

VYL POC CONVENORS AND CAUCUS:
- An exclusive caucus for VYL members who identify as a person of colour
- Two Co-Convenors for the caucus, to be elected every year by the PoC Caucus
- Mandated caucus events every year
- Co-convenors to be non-voting members of the Victorian Multicultural Labor Network Executive

AGED OUT MEMBERS:
Aged out members on the VYL executive will soon be a thing of the past thanks to the other rules change that YLL pushed for. Under the new rules, VYL members who turn 26 the year following a VYL election will not be eligible to run for the VYL executive - ensuring that VYL is represented by actual VYL members.

FIVE BENEFITS TO A POC CAUCUS AND CONVENOR:
1. Members of VYL have been asking for one
2. The PoC caucus will create a safe space for PoC members of VYL
3. The caucus is an opportunity for PoC to engage with progressive politics and the party
4. PoC caucus provides an arena to discuss and develop better policy
5. This is the beginning of a specific PoC legacy in the ALP

MALE VIOLENCE STATE CONFERENCE URGENCY RESOLUTIONS

Victorian Young Labor executive reaffirms and will act on the two motions that were passed and adopted at the 2024 Victorian ALP State Conference which make up a position on men's violence.

State Conference resolved that addressing men's violence requires urgent attention from the Victorian Labor Government. Our response needs to be intersectional and whole of
government.

Violence, aggression and assaults in schools are on the rise. Increased support should be provided to Victorian youth to address violence, misogyny in schools, and antisocial behaviour that may lead to extremism and grievance-fulled violence.

Additionally, State Conference resolved that the Victorian Labor Party entrenches a trauma-informed, zero-tolerance response to male violence and acts.

STATEMENT BY WOMENS CONVENOR ON BEHALF OF YLL.

Due to the continued increase in male violence against women, YLL yet again condemns all forms of violence against women and girls, including femicide.

Over the last weekend alone, there were four femicides in Australia. This includes a woman killed in Byford, WA on Sunday. She is the 43rd woman lost to violence this year. Our lives matter and we deserve better.

VYLL highlights the silence from our male allies on this crisis and calls on ALL men to step up and do better.

We must all use our voices, platforms and positions of leadership to create a future where all women are free from violence, discrimination and oppression, and the harms of the patriarchy.

Everyone plays a crucial role in ending violence against women. We must not leave the burden to women any longer, men must step up and be a bold, positive force for equality and justice.

YLL will always loudly support smashing the patriarchy and ending all forms of violence against women. Because everyone deserves to feel safe, equal and respected. This is not a negotiatiable.

To this end we encourage everyone to follow and support the ‘End the Misuse of NDAs’ campaign led by union women at the Trades Hall Council.
We will be hosting an event in this vain soon.

STATEMENT BY Q***R CONVENOR CONNOR TAYLOR ON BEHALF OF VYLL.

Thank you to everybody who commemorated the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on May 17.

As you may know, IDAHOBIT marks the day - just 34 years ago - that the World Health Organisation officially removed homosexuality from their classification of diseases.

It is a solemn reminder that the road to q***r/gender-diverse rights is a contemporary and ongoing long-fought battle that knows no borders.

Young Labor Left is proud to stand in solidarity with the international LGBTIQ+ community. We honour the significance of IDAHOBIT while acknowledging the importance of protecting, preserving and expanding q***r rights in Australia and abroad. 🌹
