Ever had one of those "What should I be doing with my child?" moments? You might already have the answer at home.

Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.

We know learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Those small moments at home can help build big communication, language and literacy skills.

Take another look through your What & When for Families guide to explore age-appropriate activities and learning ideas you can try together.

💛 Sometimes the best learning resource is the one you already have at home.

Practising evacuation drills is an important part of keeping children, educators and visitors safe. Regular drills help everyone become familiar with the centre’s emergency procedures, evacuation routes and designated assembly areas.

For children, practising in a calm and supportive way helps them understand what to do during an emergency without creating unnecessary fear or anxiety. It allows children to develop confidence in following educators’ instructions, walking safely to the evacuation area and staying together as a group.

For educators, evacuation drills provide an opportunity to practise their roles and responsibilities, including supervising children, checking rooms and facilities, bringing attendance records and ensuring all children are accounted for. Drills can also identify areas where procedures may need to be improved.

Regular evacuation practice helps create a strong culture of safety within the centre and ensures that, if a real emergency occurs, everyone is better prepared to respond quickly, calmly and safely.

On Jeans for Genes Day which was Thursday the 6th of August, our kindergarten children learned about babies who are born with genetic disorders that can affect their health. We had age-appropriate conversations about how some illnesses are passed on through families and how we can show kindness and care for them.
The children created beautiful greeting cards filled with love and empathy for the babies to pass it to Dandenong Hospital. They used a variety of textures and included thoughtful drawings of families, prams, playground slides, gardens, bouquets of flowers, shining suns, and love hearts, fire works to brighten someone's day.
As we talked about how to send our cards, the children excitedly suggested, "Through the post!" We will be posting their heartfelt creations to Dandenong Hospital, where they will be shared with babies and their families. This small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. We are so proud of their compassion, creativity, and growing understanding of how they can contribute positively to their community. 💙👖

Hand hygiene is one of the most effective ways to help keep children, families, and educators healthy. Regular handwashing with soap and water helps reduce the spread of germs, viruses, and bacteria that can cause illness. In an early learning environment, children are encouraged to wash their hands before eating, after using the toilet, after outdoor play, after coughing or sneezing, and after touching shared resources. Developing good hand hygiene habits from an early age supports children’s health, promotes independence, and teaches them the importance of caring for themselves and others. By working together to practise good hand hygiene, we can help create a safe, healthy, and welcoming environment for everyone.

Our kindergarten children enthusiastically explored their creativity by transforming a variety of recyclable materials into unique and imaginative creations. Using items such as cardboard boxes, tubes, bottle lids, cartons and paper, the children planned, designed and constructed objects of their own choosing.

Throughout the experience, the children demonstrated problem-solving skills, persistence and creative thinking as they experimented with different ways to join, balance and decorate their creations. They shared ideas with their peers, worked collaboratively and proudly explained the purpose of their finished projects.

This hands-on activity also provided meaningful opportunities to discuss the importance of recycling and caring for our environment. By reusing everyday materials, the children developed an understanding that many items can be given a new purpose instead of being thrown away.

Experiences like these support children’s creativity, critical thinking, fine motor development and environmental awareness, while encouraging them to become confident, capable learners who value sustainable practices.
