As the Board continues to acknowledge World Environment Day, we’re reflecting on alternative fire suppression systems available in the industry that can keep the environment safe, whilst also protecting lives and property. One such alternative that does not contain Ozone-Depleting-Substances (ODS) or Synthetic Greenhouse Gases (SGGs), is Oxygen Reduction Fire Prevention (ORFP).
ORFP systems are designed to prevent fires rather than suppressing fires. It produces breathable and controlled oxygen-reduced (hypoxic) air that prevents fire ignition, by partly filtering out oxygen from the atmospheres air. This cleaner alternative commonly replaces scheduled extinguishing agents such as NAF-S-III, NAF-P-III and FM-200.
Normal atmospheric air contains 21 per cent oxygen, and the system controls the air in the protected space to typically below 15 per cent oxygen. Common flammable solid materials and liquids cannot be ignited with an oxygen level below 15 per cent.
Key benefits of oxygen reduction fire prevention (ORFP) systems include that they:
✅ Prevent a fire from starting
✅ Are environmentally acceptable
✅ Do not require a permit issued by the FPIB
✅ Have no refill costs
✅ Has a simple installation process
✅ Are non-toxic
✅ Requires simple low-pressure pipework
✅ Slows oxidation and reduces deterioration of materials, equipment, documents and artifacts
Could you consider an Oxygen Reduction Fire Prevention (ORFP) system during your transition? A transition to cleaner alternatives can offer a number of benefits to your business, that protect from fire as well as the environment. Minimising the use of agents that contain ODS & SGGs protects the Earth’s atmosphere and the ozone layer.
As always, the adoption and operation of any fire protection system should consider any associated health and safety risks and conform with any relevant codes and applicable safety standards.
