Ever had one of those "What should I be doing with my child?" moments? You might already have the answer at home.

Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.

We know learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Those small moments at home can help build big communication, language and literacy skills.

Today we proudly took part in Jeans for Genes Day, a special initiative that raises awareness and funds for children living with birth defects and genetic conditions. The money raised helps support vital research aimed at improving the health, opportunities, and future outcomes of these children and their families.

To celebrate the day, the children enjoyed a variety of exciting blue-themed experiences, helping to strengthen their understanding of the colour blue through hands-on play. One of the highlights was painting an old pair of denim jeans. The children loved transforming the jeans into a colourful masterpiece, exploring different textures and colours and turning the activity into a wonderful sensory experience. They also practised naming colours, sharing materials, and patiently waiting for their turn.

The fun continued in the kitchen as the children became little bakers for the day! Together, we made delicious cupcakes and mixed bright blue icing to decorate them. The children enjoyed spreading the icing and adding colourful sprinkles, proudly creating treats for our bake sale.

Thanks to the generosity and support of our families and community, we raised over $100 for Jeans for Genes Day. We are so proud of the children for their enthusiasm and participation in helping make a difference while having fun and learning along the way! 💙👖🧁

AUSTRALIA AUS ALERT 🛑TODAY 🛑

Australia is testing its new national emergency warning system, AusAlert, this afternoon. Here’s what to expect:

• Test times: 2:00pm AEST (VIC, NSW, QLD, TAS, ACT) · 1:30pm ACST (SA, NT, Broken Hill) · 12:00pm AWST (WA)

• Compatible phones will vibrate, sound a 10-second siren, and show a full-screen alert

• It will override silent and Do Not Disturb settings

• The message will clearly say it’s a test — no action needed

• AusAlert uses cell broadcast technology (not SMS), replacing the old Emergency Alert system, and can target areas as small as a single building

• Full rollout for real emergencies (bushfires, floods, cyclones) begins 1 October 2026

If you have a concealed phone for safety reasons, authorities recommend switching it off or using airplane mode during the test window. Drivers shouldn’t handle phones if the alert goes off while on the road.

❤️💛🖤 NAIDOC Week 💚🤍💙

During NAIDOC Week, the children embarked on a meaningful learning journey celebrating the rich cultures, histories, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Throughout the week, the Kinder room was filled with curiosity, creativity, and discovery as the children engaged in a range of hands-on learning experiences. They listened to and retold Dreamtime stories, explored Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander songs, and moved to the rhythms of traditional music through singing and dancing. The children also expressed their learning through painting and drawing, using Aboriginal symbols to inspire their artwork.

As part of our discussions, the children learned about the deep connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have with Country and how they have cared for the land, waters, and environment for thousands of years. This inspired conversations about simple and meaningful ways we can all help care for our environment every day.

To further extend their learning, the children enthusiastically participated in a special educational session where they explored Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures in an engaging and interactive way. They learned greetings in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, discovered traditional musical instruments and the unique sounds they create, and joined in with songs and dances. The children demonstrated great interest and respect as they expanded their understanding of Australia's First Nations Peoples through these fun and enriching experiences. 🌿🎶🎨✨

After much interest in the Gingerbread Man story, the children had a fantastic time making Gingerbread Man cookies 🍪✨

This fun, hands-on cooking experience helped develop their fine motor skills as they mixed, stirred, rolled, and shaped the dough. The children eagerly helped pour simple ingredients such as flour, butter, and sugar into a large bowl before taking turns stirring and squeezing the mixture. With great excitement, they firmly pressed the gingerbread man cookie cutters into the dough to create their very own gingerbread characters.

As they baked, the children enthusiastically sang the well-loved rhyme, "Run, run, as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!" 🎶🏃‍♂️

It was wonderful to see the children so engaged in both listening to The Gingerbread Man story and participating in the cooking experience. They showed great enthusiasm, concentration, and teamwork throughout the activity, and the highlight of the day was enjoying their delicious homemade sweet treats together! 😋🍪💛

The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.
