Sad times for Victoria.
Helen Haines has reportedly lost both of her legs following a horrific targeted attack.
A 65-year-old woman, allegedly deliberately struck by a vehicle, is now fighting for her life. Regardless of her political views or the campaign she represents, she is a sister, a daughter, and a mother.
Behind the headlines, the large amounts of media coverage, the political debate, and the confusion, we must remember that this is a real-life situation involving a real person and a family whose lives have been changed forever.
Many are now raising serious concerns about the safety of our Members of Parliament. However, this issue extends far beyond those in public office. It is not just our MP’s who deserve to feel safe. Every member of our community deserves that same security.
We have witnessed this horrific attack, which some may describe as an act of terrorism. Just days ago, I reported on an incident involving a car allegedly pursuing an 11-year-old boy as he rode his scooter. The driver fleeing the scene, leaving the young boy crying, bloodied, bruised and asking whether he was going to be okay.
An 11-year-old child.
In the past week, reports have also emerged of police foiling an alleged plot by a 13-year-old to carry out a school shooting.
These incidents raise serious concerns about the levels of violence affecting our state and our nation. Violent crime is being carried out by people of any age, gender, or background. While we are fortunate to live in a beautiful state, if we don’t see action from those in positions of power, we risk allowing these problems to escalate further.
Too many people are angry, divided, and losing faith in the systems meant to protect them. Hatred is spreading rapidly, influencing people and leading them down destructive paths.
Things need to change!
Our thoughts are with Helen, her family, and her friends during this incredibly difficult time. Violence has absolutely no place in politics or in our society. We sincerely hope for Helen's recovery.
Please look after yourselves and one another.
Stay safe, everyone.
