Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds.

Stay informed: http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/warnings/

Issued at: 4:58 pm on Monday 1 June 2026.

Where:
For people in parts of Central, East Gippsland, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland and South West Forecast Districts. Locations which may be affected include Ballarat, Bacchus Marsh, Falls Creek, Yarra Glen, Dargo and Mt Baw Baw.

When:
Damaging winds developing about central and eastern areas this evening.

Situation:
A deep low pressure system and associated cold front continues to approach Victoria today, with vigorous northwesterly winds expected ahead of the cold front as it crosses the state tonight and into Tuesday morning.

Impacts:
For Central Victoria: Strong winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with damaging wind gusts of around 90 km/h are likely to develop over the Macedon and Otway ranges and their southern slopes alongside lower lying areas, including the northern suburbs of Melbourne. Additionally, exposed areas around the Bellarine and Mornington Peninsulas may also see damaging wind gusts to 90 km/h this evening.

For the Northeastern Ranges: Damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are likely over elevated areas above 1200 metres from late this evening.

Winds are forecast to ease from central Victoria before dawn on Tuesday, and from the northeastern ranges by late Tuesday morning.

What you should do:
The Victoria State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

Check https://www.bom.gov.au/weather-and.../warnings-and-alerts.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEST Monday.

Absolutely devasting news from NSW. Two Marine Rescue NSW volunteers have lost their lives while responding to a rescue call in extreme weather at Ballina, with a community member in the yacht also sadly passing away 😄

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, and the volunteers of Marine Rescue NSW. We wish those who have been injured a speedy recovery.

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

ā€œThese two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

ā€œOur thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

ā€œWe are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

ā€œWe ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,ā€ Commissioner Andrews said.

VALE LAURIE RUSSELL ESM

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Laurie Russell.

Laurie was a founding member of Wyndham SES and a true part of the unit’s history, heart, and identity. From the earliest days of the unit, he played a major role in building something that would go on to serve the Wyndham community for decades to come.

Laurie dedicated an extraordinary part of his life to VICSES, serving as Wyndham Unit Controller for more than 30 years. His leadership, commitment, and steady presence helped shape the unit into what it is today, along with the establishment of the Wyndham West unit, He later went on to support the establishment of the Point Cook Unit as a founding member, continuing his service and helping lay the foundation for another local SES presence.

Laurie’s contribution to VICSES, and to the community, cannot be measured only by years of service or titles held. His legacy lives on in the units he helped build, the people he mentored, and the countless lives impacted by the service he gave so selflessly.

For many, Laurie was more than a leader. He was a mentor, a constant, and someone whose dedication set the standard for those who followed.

Our thoughts are with Laurie’s family, friends, and all members, past and present, who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

Rest easy, Laurie. Your service, guidance, and legacy will not be forgotten.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

"Lest We Forget"

Melton SES members came together at dawn service this morning, paying tribute to the courageous ANZACs who defended Australia and New Zealand. This commemorative service honoured their remarkable legacy and the ultimate sacrifices made.

An absolutely great friend to the Melton SES unit

Vale to VICSES life member, former Board member, and one of our longest ever serving volunteer Unit Controllers Laurie Russell, a shining example of selflessness,ļæ¼dedication, leadership and service.

His legacy will continue to inspire us and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to not only work side-by-side with him ļæ¼but also had the honour to ļæ¼call him friend.

Our thoughts are with Laurie’s family, friends and all the units that have been touched by him at this challenging time.

Hang up your helmet and stow your boots. ļæ¼Rest easiest your service is done.
