It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the recent passing of Raymond (Ray) Squires AFSM, a highly respected and long-serving member of the CFS and our Meningie Brigade.

Ray dedicated over 61 years of service to the Country Fire Service, joining at just 15 years of age in 1962 with the Currency Creek Emergency Fire Service – Goolwa. His remarkable commitment saw him serve with:

• Goolwa Brigade (1963–1980)
• Narrung Brigade (1980–1996)
• Meningie Brigade (1996–2024)

Among the many major incidents Ray attended were the Kuipto Forest fires in the early 1970s, the Tooperang fires in the mid-1970s, and the Sydney fires in 1994.

Throughout his service, Ray held numerous leadership roles, including:

• Coorong Group Officer
• Coorong Deputy Group Officer (12 years)
• Narrung Captain
• Meningie Lieutenant
• District Fire Control Officer
• Training Officer

His dedication and leadership were recognised with several prestigious honours, including:

• Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) – 2006
• CFS Life Membership – 2012
• National Medal 2012 and three Clasps
• CFS 60 Year Service Clasp – 2023

Ray’s commitment to protecting his community, mentoring members, and serving the CFS with integrity and humility leaves a lasting legacy. His contribution to Meningie Brigade and the wider CFS family will never be forgotten.

Our thoughts are with Ray’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

Rest peacefully, Ray. Thank you for your service. 🚒

💨 Smoke haze from the Victorian fires is currently over Meningie and surrounding districts.
If you see flames, call triple zero (000).
More info 👇

A smoke haze from the Victorian fires is drifting across the state and is likely to persist while the fires continue to burn. The haze is currently visible across the Adelaide Hills, South Eastern districts, and the Mid North.

While the CFS will continue to monitor the situation, if you observe any flames or thick smoke plumes, call Triple Zero immediately.

Travellers near state borders should stay updated, monitor warnings, and exercise caution as smoke may reduce visibility.

Incident Update - Meningie East

The CFS continues to respond to a fire burning in crop and scrub approximately 21km north-east of Meningie in the Coorong.

Approximately 20 CFS volunteers on 6 trucks are currently working to extinguish hotspots and strengthen control lines. Heavy machinery has established a containment line around the fire, which has been burning in inaccessible terrain. Crews have contained the fire, preventing it from spreading into surrounding scrub and are being supported by Farm Fire Units.

Firefighters will remain on scene until the area is deemed safe and will continue to monitor, with heightened fire weather predicted over the coming days.

The fire started at 2:30pm on Sunday 29 December, and has burned approximately 64 hectares.

The cause of the fire has been determined as originating from farm machinery.

These fires do not currently pose a risk to the community, however smoke may be visible throughout the area. Roads are currently open around this incident; however, this may change at short notice. Emergency services may be working on and around roads in the area. To ensure your safety and that of firefighters and other emergency personnel who are working in the area, please do not enter the area unless necessary.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
For updates visit the CFS website (www.cfs.sa.gov.au) or phone the Information Hotline on 1800 362 361.

🙏Thank you, Meningie.

The tradition continues 🍭
Your support keeps our volunteers going, especially when the pager dropped this afternoon and our volunteers left work and family to assist our community, but were able to still spread the cheer this evening.

A poignant reminder to keep safe, not only during the festive season, but at all times.

We’re open 24/7, but hope to have some downtime.

Merry Christmas.

We understand times are tough, but if you can help in any way, you can help be a part of history.
This event has been running for over 30 years and we want to keep this community event going long into the future.
You can help by donating wrapped lollies in the box next to the checkout at Foodland supermarket.
Together, as a community, let’s spread the Christmas joy.
